constantly having to render
Posted by Carlos Castro on January 28, 2008 at 5:37 pmIs their some magic setting that my 42 year old eyes keep missing? I find myself in a world of constant rendering with FCP. I import a clip from my desktop or hard drive and I need to render it. Anything I pull in must be rendered. Ok fine, then any changes when I’m editing the clips after having rendered them, I’m being asked to render them again. A simple dissolve, a wipe ETC… I’m not talking about a 3d move or a key ETc… or some elaborate move. I don’t get it, I can’t imagine that the same company that brought us the Apple PC, Iphone ETC… intended this to be the case. So can someone anyone please show my the light.

January 28, 2008 at 5:44 pmsounds like your sequence settings don’t match the format of your clips.
Choose an Easy Setup that matches your clip format.
Open a NEW SEQUENCE (any existing sequence won’t be affected by the Easy Setup switch)
Import some clips…. you should be good to go without needing to render all the time.

Despite the fact that the Apple manual is quite clear on this subject, Walter Biscardi has created a great little video tutorial on this very subject for those who refuse to crack the book.

Your Sequence Settings and Clip Settings don’t match. This question has come up so often over the years I finally made a tutorial explaining how to correct this.

thanks david! actually just got back from lunch and skimming the in box, I caught the original question and responded without looking at the whole thread.
we are using a wonderful Saeco Aroma espresso machine after seeing Alton use that model in his Espress Yourself episode. in fact, that sounds like a great idea right about now……..

January 30, 2008 at 2:20 pmWell 1st of all thank you Walter and the rest of you who took the time to respond to my question. I looked at the demo you sent me Walter, it was great. I have done those things you mentioned. I recently found the right click function on my mouse. Coming from a PC world and Avid editing it has taken some adjusting for me. I was able to check my sequence VS easy set up and they were accurate.
I still had to render my clips. Go figure. You are absolutely correct the latest version of fcp 6 says it will make both sequence and easy set up match, despite this , I’m still rendering. If I add a dissolve, I need to render the transition, and so on and so on. With avid I place it on the transition and when I’m done editing I just simply render the effects and timeline and send it to my final destination. I’m sure that theirs a way to do the same with FCP, I just haven’t found it.
I have a new pro mac 8g of ram and a 2.6 dual core processor. I have a 500 mg drive I’m working with strictly for media. I heard you mention that if your CPU is fast enough you don’t have to render. Is mine fast enough?
Even when I do the things I’m supposed to do I still can’t get this system to work properly. I have Diana Weynands’ FCP for avid editors, aside from the manuals that come with fcp. I still can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. It isn’t a lack of effort on my side believe me, lol. Is their anything else you can think of that might be causing this problem for me. thanks again for all your advice. Carlos Castro

Carlos,
It’s not the sequence versus your easy set up you need to check, it’s the sequence setting compared to the format of your clips. (apologies if I didn’t understand your sentence above correctly).
When you drop a clip into the sequence…. does a colored render bar appear above it? What color?

No, not the Sequence and Easy Setup.
The raw clip and your sequence. THOSE must match.

February 2, 2008 at 2:54 amSorry I took so long to respond Dave. I’ve been busy with my day job, lol. It is red. I will go back and print out all my responses and then go through them 1 by 1 and see if they finally help me edit. I still feel it is a setting some where, that is giving me trouble. I used to be able to mark and in, and then mark an out point, then highlight the video line and press apple R and it would render. Now I can only do this with the drop down menu. thanks for your help.

Hmmm, definitely some difference between the clip and the sequence, unless there’s something weird going on.
Find out exactly what format and frame rate one of these clips is and compare that to the sequence settings. Forgive me if I state the obvious.
For the clip: choose one in your browser and then press command-9 (the shortcut for Edit Menu>Item Properties>Format). This will bring up the Item Properties window.
For the sequence: Make the sequence the active window, then choose Sequence Menu>settings.
Everything should be the same. Vid rate; frame size; compressor; pixel aspect; field dominance (not sure if that matters actually) If it all matches and you still get a red render bar, something is screwy.
Hope that helps.
David
