  • Has anyone ever had to unistall FCP to fix a problem?

Do I need to basically start over? I have tried everything I can do to fix my rendering problem and I’m still stuck in the mud. I’ve had some great response from this forum, unfortunately I can’t seem to fix my issue.
I have read the manual, I purchased a book { FCP for avid editors by Diana Weynand } that was intended for avid users to crossover to fcp.

I Have watch ad nauseum Walter Biscardi’s secrets for real-time sequences {no offense Walter} it was very, very helpful and for the life of me I can’t get by what should be the easiest of hurdles.

If you care to read further I will be as specific as possible, I have been brief in the past so as not to lose people’s interest in my problem.

    I have FCP studio 6
    Mac os x 10.5.1
    Mac pro desktop
    2×2.66 dual core intel xeon
    8 gb ram
nvidia geforce 7300 gt Video card

You get the picture it is less than 2 months old.

I work for a TV station that uses dvc pro tapes, I copied my work onto a DVD to import into my Mac. It is not copyright protect material.

I used a program I purchased {cinematize} to rip onto my drives. I made it a quick time MOV clip. SD, 640×480.
I then I’m ported the clip into my project.

I have not been able to under any circumstances make the clip match my easy setup, I always get a red line across the top of my time line. I have easy setup on these settings.{format-NTSC, rate 29.97fps, and Use dv-ntsc}.

I currently only have my source clip in the project. I have deleted the original sequence like Walter suggested. My clip is 29.97vd rate, 640×480, and dv/dvcpro NTSC compressor.

Theoretically they should match. The 1 red flag I have seen consistently is that when I setup easy setup, None of the tabs on the [USE] drop down match exactly my clip. It says dv NTSC 48 khz but when I look at playback output video: apple firewire ntsc[720×480] shows up. When I click on all the differnt options none shows 640×480 like my clip, for playback output video.

I doubt this is the problem because mac doesn’t give me any options that match. Their is no way for me to physically input the numbers to make it match.

So round and around I go chasing my sequence and setup tail and every time despite doing my best to follow step by step I get the same Damed result.

When the Change sequence settings to match clip setting tab comes on I hit yes and I still need to render.

Just for kicks I once hit NO and the same result happened. It is quite possible that despite my attempt to follow instruction to a T, I have missed something.

If you have bothered to read this far, thank you very much, even if you can’t help me. thank you very much for taking the time to read my issue.

I hope someone can because I’m ready to throw in the towel and just go back to what is probably an inferior product in Avid, but at least I can operate it.

Thanks, a very frustrated Cuban American.

    try this

select one of these troublesome clips in the browser
choose Modify menu > Make Multiclip Sequence…
    press OK

a new folder will be created … ignore that
a new sequence will also be created, probably called “Multiclip Sequence 1”, or something similar

double clip that sequence to open it in the timeline
the sequence will contain the originally selected clip
is there a red render bar over that clip in this new sequence?
press cmd-zero to open the Sequence Settings window
what are the settings displayed? detail for us all the settings

The first thing that jumps out at me is your source footage. You’re trying to put a square (640×480) into a rectangle (720×480.) I’m not familiar with the software that you used to rip your video, but I can tell you that in this scenario you will always have to render. Try ripping your footage again using 720×480 or use quicktime pro to export your 640×480 to 720×480.

Just to be clear DV, NTSC is 720×480.

    Hope this helps!

Didn’t work Andy. I got this error message after hitting ok on the multi clip drop down. {sequence error. Unable to add clip to sequence possible media limits problem in clip or sequence.} Then it made a small box with my clip in. It is about a qt size box. When I put it on the time line it brought up the sequence doesn’t match clip prompt and It still makes me render it to use it on the time line. Thanks Andy.

Your clips need to be 720×480 for dv, not 640×480.

    Carlos,

Why did you do the step with Cinematize??? If you copied your work onto a DVD as you stated you would only need to import the DVCPro file into FCP. If on the otherhand you made a video DVD and forgot to mention that, and then used Cinematize to rip that, then your problem is not with FCP, but rather with Cinematize.

Why don’t you start at the beginning again and tell us exactly what type of files you ended up with on DVD after leaving the TV station. If those are still available we can help you…

Carlos, I feel your pain. I have gotten the red line when importing things from dvd. Even though 640×480 is not dv resolution, you should be able to load this into the timeline and then export just that clip in the timeline as a quicktime movie to create a new file(tedious I know). If you do this, the export should take on the attributes of your DV settings in the timeline. You should then be able to bring the exported movie back into your project and the red line not be there. Hope this helps.

David you are right and the rest of the guys who mentioned that dv is 720. That is where my problems lie. I was using cinematize because as you mention David I made a video DVD. I was not transferring files. I happened to fix my problem by mistake only after a few of you guys mentioned 720.

I set the easy setup again and the sequence to match 720 and then imported my source again. Since I was using Walters principals for setting the time line and sequence I always answered yes, then naturally it would make me render the clip since it didn’t match my settings. So just for kicks and grins I said no to the prompt that FCP gives you when things aren’t matched up right and sure enough It let me pull it into the time line.

No render needed. I made a cut and added a transition and no render needed. I just saved the project and I’ve been transferring the rest of my sources since. It works now no problem. I can’t explain why its working but it is. I wasn’t aware that dv was 720, I thought 720 only applied to HD formats. Thanks very much for your help.

Thanks john, that was going to be my next move since a co-worker mentioned this idea to me as well. It is essentially a copy with the correct settings, thanks for your help. I’m just glad I got this monkey of my back.
