The folks who I know who are using it are mostly doing it to just catalog the assets as far as “where is it”. It’s a tough fit into the workflow because the RED uses so many files for a single “clip” whereas CatDV is centered on a more Quicktime based single file per clip methodology.
That, coupled with the fact that RED shoots were traditionally shorter format have , I think, kept folks from adding CatDV into their workflows.
Obviously the search and archive functions would be great but it’s hard to deal with the fact that for each “clip” in CatDV there are quite a few assets to track. It could be done, but mostly you’d use CatDV after the assets were in FCP and go from there while maintaining a “RAW asset” catalog for the original camera files.
I’d be thrilled to hear how folks may have done this. Our own Kevin Duggan knows a bit about RED. 😉

Id say that Import Warnings are mainly to be ignored unless you have problems that need troubleshooting.
I seldom (almost never) have an import that doesn’t throw up a “warning”, yet seldom have problems with the media. Note that they say “minor” most of the time.
The app is a bit “melodramatic” in my opinion. 😉

Rolf, I just want to clear this up for folks.
If you upgrade your server software to the beta and then don’t buy CatDV 9, will you be able to downgrade the schema? Will they otherwise be able to return to their licensed version of Server or are they stuck with the new version of the server?

First, I’m sorry that it didn’t work out for you.
But the thing about your quote, as Rolf said, is that you actually aren’t using the app as designed. In a networked system, CatDV stores its metadata in a database in the CatDVServer app. With two machines, you can in some instances use it over a network, but you are bound by network performance, Java issues and other things. The development of the app as far as a networked solution is moving further and further towards the database side of things, to the detriment of stand alone performance in some cases.
I hope you find a solution but know that CatDV isn’t really aimed at replacing Lightroom or any other standalone apps, it’s more to be compared to DAM’s such as Final Cut Server, B4M’s product line, North Plains and others in that field. Unlike these, it can serve certain small users and can be purchased and installed for less than $10,000, but the stand-alone product can be limited, as a $340 version of a sometimes $50,000-$100,000 system would be expected to be.
Finally, in my opinion, it’s not intended to be a “do it yourself” system. This is only me speaking, but honestly, it’s much easier if you have an integrator to help you get it running. (Yes, this is what I do for a living so take that with a huge grain of salt.) But if you read on here long enough… you’ll see that that’s usually the case. It’s a deep and sometimes daunting program. It’s powerful but with that flexibility comes a good bit of customization, troublshooting and learning that you may not, as a creative person, choose to do.
We are in the early days of this whole industry, I hope things become more plug and play and again, good luck and I hope you find a solid solution to your problem.

I’d still like to hear folks experiences on large catalog sizes in standalone. BUT… as we have said, if you have server, do yourself a favor and keep the size down.

I’ve seen this a lot myself.
We usually use the “Build Thumbnails… command to rebuild them.
Maybe see if that gets them straight or if the query still shows them?

Thkns for raising this and reminding me to post this question.
Matt, Rolf, Kevin, can we put this to bed? I’d love to have an “official” number that, if you go over, is considered “possible but unsupported”. There maybe should be published guidelines. So people can plan their structures, even as I know every machine is different.
At least folks would have an idea so they could plan catalogs and of course if they were above that they’d know to expect trouble.
As has been stated, my personal methodology is if I had to have 100,000 assets online, I’d have 500 catalogs, not 50. I did a search the other day and modified 9,900 assets in a single stroke but I’d not want to work on that day to day.
Could the folks on this board pitch in and talk about where the app is reliable in the real world for them?
Who’s running what out there, in a solid reliable fashion?
I’m saying 1,000 as my personal max for video assets. What’s your number?
