hmm… wait a sec.
Hey Greg, could your software make that play with a simple extension change or maybe even without?
Seems to me that if it’s HDV and that’s showing as MPEG2 then CatDV could see it with some Calibrated magic.
If this were sorted I know of a bunch of folks on the web who would need it. lol If you google this everyone is griping.

Then you will have an HDV format .mov and your footage will be easily editable on your rig, and more importantly, should be completely compatible with other systems for easy transport of footage to FCP and most any other editing system out there.
I’m gonna see if Greg from Calibrated can weigh in on this a bit as it seems to be common. Greg, can you give us the Windows workflow for this so that it’s available on the interwebs?

To be clear.
So you have HDV and can’t play it?
And then Adobe Premiere is transcoding the HDV into MPEG-2 TS files?
Seems like something that Main Concept would sell, but let me see what’s out there.
This stuff is not really my forte as I’m mostly FCP and Avid on OSX but I’ll see if I can get a rec as I’m always curious about these things.

Am I correct that you’re not using the CatDV server, just saving remote catalogs over the network?
If so, then there’s likely nothing wrong with the app, we do this all the time. It’s an OS or network hardware, sadly.
Obviously no one could use this app if it performed as it is on your network.

Yes, the translation of the xml data was through the Worker node, but can also be done with an outside script using XSLT. I think Kevin’s way would work better and be less trouble.

Sorry man, got a little busy out there but you have to know that doing this over a message board is like doing surgery through a key hole, not the best or easiest.
When you are setting path-based preview paths you can usually ignore the “original” setting unless you want to set up a special path map. You can choose use it as a wizard where you choose the hi-res, original path and then point to the place you want to place the previews but it’s often not needed. (again specific to your system)
Your storage naming was definitely a problem. Things might straighten out now, but in FCP, you have to get away from the tape based previews. I don’t think that having them both live is a good thing.
Honestly, I’ve never installed a single system in 4 years that used tape-based previews. I’d like to hear from anyone who’s used them to confirm that or refute it, but I can say that I have dozens of systems out there working with path-based only so that has to count for something. Mr. Duggan told me to stay away from them and I did.
Remember that certain features in CatDV exist because certain companies requested/paid for them, or once did. They do not apply to all installations and unless you have engineered your system to use that feature it may cause problems. Features often outlive their useful lifespan but cannot be EOL’d because they are in use on a specific client site. (Has anyone out there really exported a CMX3600 EDL from CatDV lately?)
Rename the drives, make sure that your paths, when you drag clips in, show up as /Volumes/drive_name no matter if it’s local or over the network and you should be fine. It’s that simple.
In a small rig like yours, with one proxy location and just macs, there should be one preview path. That’s all. /Volumes/path/to/where/you/want/previews/to/go
Troubleshooting path based previews is insanely easy. If you look at the media path value and then look inside the preview directory and the paths don’t match, it won’t work. If they match, it will.
If not, then you have to get your dealer or a tech involved. “Do It Yourself” is great for bird houses and gardening but a waste of time in professional post production. You can lose a lot of hair, or get a lot of gray. 😉

For the clients in the size that you guys work with, I’d bet that their WAN infrastructure would support the single db served over a WAN with synchronized proxy.
The replication of MYSQL db’s is mostly used for backup and safety. If you can avoid a 2 way sync, try to. I’m not sure if Squarebox actually supports the replication model in production. (that would be a good one for him to weigh in on here.) It was going to be used in one large shop that I know of and then it didn’t happen.
If you want, have Kobrin buzz me and we can draw it for you or do a quick call. Again, it’s up to their IT folks to make sure the path is there and speedy.
Whitney, that’s an easy thing to pass off, but without a server there’s no way to make sure you’re system’s metadata setups stay the same and so things wander. If you’re disciplined you can pass things back and forth, but you have to keep your setups in sync. If you’re versions are tight and you have a unified set of “user” fields, you should be good to go.
