You can download free or trial codecs as they are completely separate from CatDV. If you do choose to purchase codecs, as opposed to the MXF option in CatDV, they might come from Sony, Calibrated or MOG or someone like that.

Under the conditions tab, “Exclude” in the manual they discuss the various things you can exclude but *.xmp should get you started.

It should work.
Check in your “Other” fields for the METADATA fields. You may find that some of the fields from Prelude are in there, grouped together.
For larger clients we’ve put in scripting to separate data coming out from Adobe Bridge in the past and this was how that worked.

Yes, FFMPEG might need some tweaking to do certain files. The presets offered out of the box are suggestions and as you have probably seen, you can add your own arguments to the settings to override the defaults.
Are your time lapse clips at strange frame rates or standard ones?

I’ll take a crack at it.
It’s really not “the MXF option” in a way. If you have the correct codecs and drop a single muxed MXF file into “regular” CatDV, it should play so you can deal with certain types of MXF without it.
Also, “the MXF option” doesn’t give you any codecs so you still need to buy and or install any of those that you need.
“Then what does it do”, you might be asking?
“The MXF option” should be called, “the option that lets CatDV take MXF formats that aren’t a single file and import them as a clip or clips that you can play and manage as assets.” But that’s long and lame and so it’s called “MXF option.” 😉
If you look at a P2 or XDCAM folder structure out of the camera, there’s dozens of files that combine to make maybe just a few clips. The video and audio and metadata are all separated out and the metadata is often in an attached XML file. “The MXF option” allows CatDV to read the metadata and gather the essence files together and present them as playable clips that can also be managed as a clip instead of a bunch of files and folders.
You might call it “The MXF grouping option.”

I’m sure support will chime in, but first check your CatDV preferences/settings for your version of Premiere and then also check your CatDV version.
I know that there was an Adobe Update recently that changed a few things.

Robb, it’s 10.9 and that’s fine.
10.10 (Yosemite) won’t run v10, only CatDV 11.

Sam is pretty great and it’s cool to hear you temper your experience taking into account the budget/price of the software.
Support is expensive for DAM systems but as you note, critically important. I think that comparing Axle, CatDV and Cantemo is challenging since they have “radically” different pricing as well and how much support is “thrown in” is a point of contention when just buying the software.
Note that CatDV pricing varies widely depending on the scale and the scope of the system and the professional services. Cantemo does as well, but we find that the initial “buy in” on a CatDV system can be smaller. This is not always a good thing, but you can get started with CatDV at a much smaller level and then scale as needed.
For instance, many companies purchase CatDV and get through the initial stages and then engage in a more involved deployment once they have a better idea of what they want to do in a larger DAM sense.
We find that many other DAM’s require a much larger commitment of time and resources up front, so there’s no “toe dipping” period. Again, I personally wish everyone would/could engage in a large deployment and consulting contract but we know that that is not appropriate for all clients so take that into account.
I often to tell people that you can buy a small CatDV (or Axle) system and not even use it and no one would get fired. That would not fly on a larger $100k+ DAM. When/if you need/want more help, there are resources available from your reseller, Squarebox or NSA.

Justin, as Robb said, CatDV links proxy by path. If you move files, you need to move the proxy or as was suggested, add proxy equivalencies. This will prove problematic with your Facilis storage. This has been covered here in other threads. (I’ll try to search it when I can.)
In basic form, if a file is at:
/Volumes/drive-name/projects/file.mov
the proxy will link at:
/Volumes/proxy/Volumes/drive-name/projects/file.mp4
That path should be for-ever… if a file is restored to an alternate location, then the proxy must be moved to the new path, or you must trick the system into seeing the files by setting a path equivalency.
This is why a good consultant will advise you to set up a fixed set of media paths that are persistent. DAMs hate when drive paths appear and disappear.
In the end, (warning free advice & opinion here!) you need some training and an overall strategy. This is fairly easy to accomplish, in several ways, but it’s not something that’s easily typed on a message board as it’s very specific to each client’s environment. It will likely be a change in your workflow more than a change in CatDV or the config. We’ve done tons of systems on Facilis rigs with no issues.
I’d find a great integrator and get them in asap before you end up with a ton of unlinkable media. I know both the resellers you have engaged with have great techs I’m sure they can sort you out and if not, they can help you engage someone who can.
