Yes, It’s locked for a reason. 😉
Yes, that’s the one. And if you’re ok with it, I’d love to check a restored copy from TM.

James, no!!!!!
That’s the installer folder. There’s none of your data there.
The “catdv” folder I’m speaking of is hidden in the /usr directory which is not visible through the finder except by either using the terminal or the “Go To Folder” command under the “Go” menu in the Finder.
Type /usr/local/ into the “go to folder” box and see what you see.
As discussed before, if you are on 10.5 or 10.6 server OS, you will have a different path, (you’ll have to go look it up) but if you installed mysql fresh, the path I laid out, should get you to the db.
As is often mentioned here, you can get CatDV running without an “admin” but to really make sure it’s solid, Rolf’s not kidding, you might need some command line knowledge, as mysql isn’t really “user friendly.” D@#n these computers! It’s a lot of important data, and it’s worth making sure it’s secure. If you have an IT dept. they can probably help you sort this. If not, it might be worth a call to your dealer to make sure that you’ve got this all solid and secure.

James, thanks for cruising. 😉
Hey, I’m not sure about how Time Machine handles the sql files but in theory it should cover you.
Perhaps browse back in the /usr/local/”whatever your mysql install is called” folder and see that you’re getting a copy of /data/catdv/ and that should cover you.
I so need to write a shell script for public consumption for this. (As soon as all the other stuff is done.) 😉
Check that file and if any of the other crew here uses TM, let us know if it looks good. Also, if your catdv folder isn’t too big, and you trust me, feel free to send it to me and I’ll look it over. I’d like to confirm that too.

Rolf, so let me check this. If you have Tape Based proxies, do they show up in the “proxy path” field? If not, I see why you have to create a path for the original and then map to the proxy.
If there was a path there, you could move the proxy with the Worker and create a path based link that way but I’m guessing since it’s tape name and TC that there’s no path in the proxy path field.

“Ultimately, the fix is to reload all the old tape-based footage and redo everything as path based.”
Seems like with some fancy thinking you could get that to work out without re-ingest. You probably just need to remake the proxy, yes? If so, it’s worth letting your worker node crank (or your machine at night) to just get that over with.
Worst case you’d need to re-analyze the footage as well, but I can’t imagine that you would.
Also, one interesting idea. Are you on v9? If so, can you check the proxy path field and see if it shows you the correct path to tape-based proxy? If so, then you could simply have a Worker script move the proxy into the correct path-based path. I’m betting it won’t show and you’ll have to remake it but that’s not such a bad gig since it’s not a piece by piece manual process.

In Progress, if you’re speaking about the LTO. I’d expect it shortly.

January 12, 2012 at 4:54 pm in reply to: General questions for CatDV configuration/setup (THANK YOU!)Nice to “meet” you, Melanie.
The idea is a networked approach, it’s not to have them connected to the hi-res necessarily, but to have a network connection to the proxy. This is done in all MAM systems but some share the media through the client. CatDV requires a separate share for the proxy, which is actually nice when you get deeper because you can share proxy to large groups by having multiple, synchronized proxy shares. You can even host proxy is different physical locations and or keep a copy of the proxy on a portable drive so that you can view proxy in the field or at a client site on a laptop.
I have some new videos coming this year so stand by!

January 11, 2012 at 10:22 pm in reply to: General questions for CatDV configuration/setup (THANK YOU!)Yes, a agree on the proxy. h.264, mp4, photojpeg, all are useable depending on your needs. If you interact with PC’s and share files on the internet you might choose mp4, for instance. If you need frame accuracy for editing, photo jpeg is good but larger for the same quality. It’s all a balance but as Rolf says, test a lot first.
Agreed “slow” is hard to pin down. Slow to open, slow to save? There are tons of threads on here about proposed catalog size. Dig in a bit and you’ll find your answer.
The rest is just operational stuff that should be sorted by training or your integrator. If that’s you, then you’ll have to poke around a bit and do some reading. The interface is a bit deep at first, I know. A training session from your dealer or a remote training session purchased from JB&A would make your life far easier.
Rolf has laid out the basics but a full discussion of permissions and network layout is a bit hard to do on here. But I agree, share proxy read only to the users and r/w to the people and machines that make proxy. In our shops usually only the worker nodes and server have r/w to proxy.
Keep us posted.

CatDV creates the proxy files and puts them into the correct folders for you. That is not a manual process.
Set your proxy path in the second, lower selection area of the “Media Search Paths” dialog box and that should put things in the equivalent paths, meaning /Volumes/Drive_Name_etc… If not, something is set up incorrectly.
As to when your NAS fills up… You either copy those files onto a new NAS share named the same thing. (a-ha!) or… add another proxy path in the Search Path and it’ll just use 2 proxy shares. No need to delete proxy in this day and age. Again, because CatDV is path based, it doesn’t know the difference between our old 500GB proxy drive named “catdv-proxy” and our new huge 3TB proxy drive also named “catdv-proxy” so file copies and drive swaps are super easy.
Good luck out there.
