If you’re asking the question I think you are, it’s not that silly.

Command-C, your regular copy command actually copies the metadata if you have a clip selected. (It’s not obvious in the docs.)

Then you can do as the post says, select “Paste Metadata” from your “Edit” menu.

Could you tell us what format you are bringing the Bridge metadata over in? XML, CSV, etc?

Or are you just dragging files into CatDV? If so, I’m not sure that Bridge writes the data into the files. If it does, then you can move fields around inside the CatDV database using “Bulk Edit”. You can find any imported metadata in the “Other” field panel.

If you have to do a large set of data, you’d probably want to export the metadata from Bridge (maybe you have already?)

If you’re talking about exported metadata, the process would likely go something like this:

Are you using a script to get the data out of Bridge? There’s a pretty detailed SDK for Bridge and a lot of folks have created export scripts that I’m assuming you could modify to get an XML that CatDV would take.

From that exported metadata file, the process is to create an XML, translate the fields you want to map to USER fields in CatDV to their appropriate values in your setup (use an XSLT to do this or even MS Excel if it’s a one-time thing) and then import the XMLs into CatDV.

Be careful to watch your paths on import so that you don’t have to relink all the files.

Jason, thanks for that info, and good catch.

Rolf, is there a plan to do that field mapping in the tool? If not, I’m betting an extraction script to take the info and pull it into XML for re-import would be a good one to have.

Jason, in your original import into CatDV, did the data go into or ?

January 26, 2012 at 4:47 pm in reply to: XDCAM Media Detaches? After Directory Import

In the end, for media, there’s not as much of an issue as there is for archive. By only “gathering” the media file, you won’t be sending the associated folders and xml files to the archive if you use CatDV to archive the clips. This happens in XDCAM EX often. You have the mp4 but nothing else from the card.

This is a huge issue and so any of you out there doing this please check your catalogs. If you try to use the footage in any other system, you will likely want that other “debris” that comes with XDCAM.

Also, if you are using an MXF format that’s not muxed with audio and video together, if you don’t have metaclips, you won’t have the audio and or video depending on what the case may be.

Check your clips to make sure when you expose the elements of the metaclip in the tree that you have all the assets that make up that clip. If not, change settings, or your license, and re-import.

I’m not sure if this is the case with your files as I’m not familiar with all the formats you have but the rules are the same.

These are showing up as movies (green icons) instead of metaclips (the blue.)

In order to have all the media and associated files you need to make sure they are importing as metaclips.

    Can you confirm this?

    Sebastien,

Totally correct. This was a response to a thread from a while ago,

    https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/278/875

about what to do if a user couldn’t set up a proper cron job. As I stated, and should state again… the best solution and the one approved by Squarebox is to have your integrator set up a script to dump the database. But as we see here, often, there are a lot of folks who end up with CatDV and no admin help.

This is the “anything is better than nothing” thread. 😉

Nice to have you on the board!

Got it, and just completed a test.

The Catalogs (I believe 3?) opened and were fine.

I can’t fully say, due to the limits of the test but it appears that Time Machine versions of your CatDV data restore fine.

I say, “better than nothing, and likely all you need,” just to keep myself out of trouble. But when I placed your data in my server, it all worked as nirmal.

I’d like support to weigh in too.

Guys in the UK, let me know if you’d like a look at this but the db came up live on my machine without issue.

No! I didn’t mean yours, I meant my silly question of “have you done this?” I assumed you had. lol

There is no shame in “not knowing”. Trust me, there’s a lot I call and email folks for. 😉

    Stupid question warning:

Did you try closing and re-opening the catalog? Also often clicking on the clips updates their icon.

As, to the “it’s not built in” comment, CatDV is an enterprise level asset management system that just happens to be priced at a level that non-enterprise customers can purchase. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t require serious admin chops to administer it.

Let’s use the car analogy again. If you are given a Ferrari, you still have to pay for the $2,000 tune-ups. You can’t just take it to Jiffy Lube on the corner. Hopefully that’s ok, because you didn’t spend the $250,000 on the car so there’s budget for the upkeep, but if not, you’d buy a Honda. In the DAM space, there just isn’t really a Honda.

Most admins have a backup scenario in place and one that they prefer. And so the developers allow them to handle that and other aspects of the configuration. For instance, if you are using MySQL on that system to do other things, you might already have a backup in place. (One would hope.) In our setups, we often have other databases in addition to the CatDV db that are all being handled differently. So other systems could be impacted by the CatDV backup. If for instance CatDV stopped MySQL to do it’s own backup, other processes could be disrupted.
