I can’t speak to the error, that’s for SB Support, but could you tell us more about the “rewrap?”
Are you not transcoding them into another format? You are actually just changing the wrapper?
I’ve never seen this done successfully myself, but I’m curious as to how it performs in the Quicktime player, separately from CatDV Pro, as it would save a ton of time, I’m sure.

I WOULD CREATE PROXY AND SAVE THE CATALOGS AS .CDV FILES FOR HIM!

This is easy to do but can be a tricky workflow. The basic steps are:
1 – create proxy of everything.
2 – copy that proxy to an external drive
3 – Save all of your catalogs out as local catalogs onto that drive. File Menu>Local Catalogs>Save As Catalog
4 – Set the settings on his copy of CatDV to point to the proxy.
5 – Wait while he chews through his last 10 years of life. Provide tissues if the last 10 years were sad, and or sexy. (I could not help myself again.)
NOTE: do not touch your version of the catalogs while he does this unless you want to have to merge everything and spend your next 10 years cleaning up data. (I will not watch that video however.)
6 – As he finishes, reimport the catalogs using “Publish” or “Bulk Publish”.
7 – 2 options – 1. Celebrate your victory or 2. Give up and call a dealer or Squarebox to remote in and set this up for you.

One thing to try.
If you are copying from an email or rtf or Word file, try saving the file as .txt to remove formatting.
I used to keep all my licenses in .rtf files and they stopped working.
See if a text file helps.

This brings up a good design point.
I’m not sure what the official strategy is but our company establishes documentation for a deployment so that all fields are unique across an enterprise.
For instance, if you wanted a field for “project name” and it was User21 and some other department wanted a field called Facility Zip Code and they wanted it to be User 21, we don’t allow that. We set up our fieldsets so that all data maps across all groups.
This means that our deployments have far higher field counts but there is never confusion moving data between groups, departments, shows, or facilities. User21 is project name. You can make another field, but there is no “other” 21.
The real reason for this is that once you leave the Worker Node which is db aware and move into other scripting mechanisms, the field ID never has a name, only a number. XML translations would be a nightmare if you had to read field labels, for instance and parse by that instead of USER ID.
This is only how NSA/HidefCowboy has done it. If there are other strategies, please weigh in. But these days we are integrating so many separate systems that this convention is critical.

CatDV works with any mountable filesystem. It really doesn’t care.
The performance and permissions of the storage apply. If it’s fast, you can play hires media, if it’s slow, you cannot.
If you have write permissions, CatDV can move and add things, if you only have read, then CatDV has read.
CatDV is “compatible” with everything from a USB stick to a million dollars worth of DDN drives. Let us know how it goes.

I’m curious about this as well. (The new version that is.)
Cache-A, BRU, Atempo, anyone, LTO tape doesn’t like a lot of little files and that’s how DAM’s tend to deliver them.
From what I know of the Cache-A SDK, you cannot perform “staging” through the SDK. This isn’t a CatDV limitation, it’s not provided for.
Can some of the CatDV and Cache-A crew confirm this?

Not only can you “pack up and leave” I have done quite a few jobs where we deliver metadata from CatDV to other systems and also receive data back so that the systems stay in sync.
CatDV can receive new clips via XML or update clip data from any system that can deliver info through a command line command.
Additionally North Shore Automation has written a tool that will allow you to update records via XML as well so communication can be 2 way via XML.
NSA currently has XML translations for these systems:

OVP or video channels –

MetaCafe
Daily Motion
YouTube

Thank you Sebastien, good to hear from the Win side and I agree with all you said about the system.
Also I forgot to mention that in most of our larger shops we have several machines running processes. So the “server” is more of a “system” of boxes.
CatDV Server, the app, is just a db so it can be anything. We’re currently designing some really accelerated hardware optimized for the db functions alone. The Worker Nodes that automate things and run scripts can run on Windows and Mac hardware and can do path translations between the file systems so in a mixed environment, the “Server” can be OSX, Windows or Linux, but the Worker Nodes might be on a different OS or even mixed between Mac and PC. Add to this your transcoding needs and things get interesting. So a single box to 4 or more boxes can make up what we discuss here as a “CatDV Server System.”
The bottom line is that planning a workflow, as was mentioned, requires knowledge of the system that is outside the normal IT or Video skill set. Get a reseller you can trust and follow their lead.
The good news? It’ll run on literally anything, it’s just a matter of how well.
