As mentioned the final deliverable is the key to the correct answer. As a freelance editor I spend much of my time picking up the pieces created by wrong decision making. For some crazy reason people with low budgets spend a great deal of their budget trying to save money! Doesn’t leave a lot to do the job properly.

  • You should have another video out 1 or 2 BNC that is clean video on the back.

I use SxS for paying jobs as if there was a problem with MxR adapter and Transcend cards then it would not be fair on the client. Having said that I have used the adapter system on some of my own productions since getting an EX1 back in February 2008 without incident.

The Nanoflash will not convert but will record the EX3 in camera down converted output.

Just discovered CatDV as used by a lot of companies in the USA and BBC in UK. You tube has some good presentations that show it in action.

  • My EX1 has just been fixed after forgetting who it was. Not too expensive but always a constant worry that it may happen at any time. It has suffered from this malady a few times but the camera really does produce fantastic pictures when up to spec.

I cannot remember and cannot locate the invoice but I would guess around £800-1200. Anything seems cost £500 or so from Sony. I can suggest a good company to try as I have just had my EX1 serviced to cover familiar lack of focus issue. Top Teks in Harefield UK have a really good engineer for Sony camera repairs and the cost is a lot less than Sony.

Been there “purple hair in the gate”- had it fixed by Sony. In my case it was dirt in the prism block, and was not a cheap fix. Let’s hope you are luckier than me.

I also have a Panasonic HPX250 and use the same ND6 principle of never shooting above f4-5.6. Alan Roberts explains all in his BBC report for the HPX371 amongst others. As mentioned it is physics not the manufacturers that causes the softness.
