I tried out the Canon at NAB…then went out and bought the EX1r.
I found it too heavy and it lacked many features the EX1r offers. I’m very happy with my choice.

I also vote with Craig on this.

With the cost of 32 gig cards coming down all the time and the quality getting so much better (eg. Hoodman adapter and SDHC cards that you can use exactly as SxS cards – overcranking and all). I feel it would be crazy to try dumping your precious video to a storage device at the same time as working on your shoot.

Just file them like you used to do with your tape or film cans and do the transfers later when you can take time and care to do it properly.

If you’re doing so much work and using that many tapeless cameras a few hundred extra bucks is nothing compared to the peace of mind you’ll get doing it properly.

I updated my EX1r with the new version myself. Straight forward if you follow the instructions carefully and don’t rush it. I also have two Hoodman adapters along with the 32gig class 10 cards they recommend. I can even do extended overcranking just the same as using the 16gig SxS card. No errors at all. I guess the upgrade is the all important feature…and ensuring you wait the correct time before ejecting the cards…and not running out of battery power!

Hi Alexander,
I really appreciate your feedback. Unfortunately gaming is not my strong point, so I doubt I will gain any benefit from the excellent graphics card.
I am still at a loss as to why the Vegas designers cannot build in a way for Vegas to use the added power of the graphics cards which are now being included in most mid-to-high end laptops. It would also benefit the desktop computers!

Anyone else out there with ideas for a laptop for HD location work?
I’m shooting on an EX1r. I need to be able to see a smooth preview. Mainly cuts, wipes or dissolves with occasional text and graphics effects. Will include colour correction and minimal effects. I would be happy to render and graphics effects if necessary.
I’d like to edit in the native codec of the EX1r. Output would be to HDD and DVD.
Anyone with laptop editing experience – PLEASE share your experiences.

I am trying to decide if the HP Pavilion DV8t quad will work for me on location. I’m shooting on a EX1r and will need to edit in HD.
What HP machine do you have, and have you solved your issues yet?

Hey Albert,
Just something to remember – Vegas does not use the graphics card in the computer. Speed is purely processor related. This is something I have been griping about for some time as so many high-end laptops come with a decent graphics card these days, it’s crazy not to be able to make use of that extra processing power. But alas, Vegas does not function this way at this time. So when deciding what computer you’re going to use, try and get the fastest processor you can afford.

Don’t know if this will help, but I found this free program on the internet – called The Levelator, <https://www.conversationsnetwork.org/levelator>.
It works well in interview situations, but I’m not sure of what it does to the bit rate and/or frequency range. It is designed mainly for podcast use. If you find the quality acceptable, it will save you tons of time.

I have recently bought a Dedolight “Ledzilla” for my EX1r. It is an outstanding light for its size, but it is pricey (you did say you were looking for the “best” not “cheapest”). It is very well constructed and will serve you well. It even has barn doors that really work! Spits out a ton of light which is very controllable with a built-‘on’ diffuser and tungsten gel. Fully dimmable with no change in temperature.

I just bought my EX1r last week from B&H and have detected the issue you mention on super-slow zoom. I was beginning to think it was my own fault, so thank you for putting that to rest. Alas, it appears that the issue is inherent with even the latest cameras. I have just updated the firmware…but haven’t tested the zoom since. But I really doubt this will have any effect.
