Has anyone used the Asus g73h laptop for HD editing (Vegas or any other platform)? It specs out really well and the dual HDDs ‘should’ allow me to do some short form editing. What do you think?
I’m still searching for a reasonably priced laptop to use on location. – Have been looking at the HP Pavilion DV8 quad as well.
Your opinions and advice is appreciated!
    Cheers,

    Bruce

    I currently have this laptop.

For Vegas the preview is horrendous. Even with Twinturbo mode on.

Other than that the laptop is solid. Gaming wise MW2 runs at 70fps constant on max. Crysis on high 60fps.

It works great with photoshop, after effects you name it. I wish Vegas wasnt such trash.

I actually use the Asus G72. I edit, record music, use after effects, play Age Of Conan, and love this computer. I even bought two of them actually. I dont know much about the G73, but if its similar to the G72 then its a very good buy, though I know the version I have is the highly sought version.

I will say that when I render HD in Sony Vegas it can get choppy uncompressed, but I think that might just be me not knowing how to do that right, I have to use a codec or compression on the renders to come out smooth. But, any kind of render doesnt even take half the RAM power of the laptop.

    Awesome for the money.

    Hi Alexander,
I really appreciate your feedback. Unfortunately gaming is not my strong point, so I doubt I will gain any benefit from the excellent graphics card.
I am still at a loss as to why the Vegas designers cannot build in a way for Vegas to use the added power of the graphics cards which are now being included in most mid-to-high end laptops. It would also benefit the desktop computers!
    Sigh…
Anyone else out there with ideas for a laptop for HD location work?
I’m shooting on an EX1r. I need to be able to see a smooth preview. Mainly cuts, wipes or dissolves with occasional text and graphics effects. Will include colour correction and minimal effects. I would be happy to render and graphics effects if necessary.
I’d like to edit in the native codec of the EX1r. Output would be to HDD and DVD.
Anyone with laptop editing experience – PLEASE share your experiences.
    Cheers,

    Bruce

I was drooling when I first caught glimpse of the G73, but check this out: there computer has almost NO connectivity. No 1394 (iLink/firewire), eSata, and a couple of other things.
No doubt about it: the G73 is a big, bad machine. But if you’re doing the kind of work that requires a 17″ screen and up to 16Gb Ram (upgradable to), then you’re going to also need to plug into some connectivity with cameras and drives and so on.
Instead, I ‘settled’ for the Asus G51-series (mine is the jx-x5). I studied the matter intently for over three weeks, checking and rechecking the forums, specs, reviews, everything till it got to the point where not even the guys at the retail stores could manage outtalk me in terms of specs–and I’d advise you look carefully at the stuff they have at Best Buy, for instance; not that they’re HORRIBLE, mind you–and every road seemed to lead me back to the G53.

The screen’s slightly smaller, and you can’t put more than 8Gb in it, but my feeling is if you really want THAT MUCH, then you should put your money to a desktop instead. And even so, you’ll still be able to talk MacBook users down whenever they try and tell you how much better their mac is than your Asus. ;P More CPU, more durability/longer lasting (independent research shows Asus to be the most durable of all laptop manufacturers), more software options, ALL for less money.

I’ve only been able to do a little ‘test’ editing with Vegas 9 since I got the computer, but so far, haven’t really had any snags. Except for the fact that the windows media player is having trouble dealing with the HD stuff I rendered as a test. Alotta lag, and I’m still trying to figure out Why.

Take this for all it’s worth. . .but I’d advise you to stay away from the G73, UNLESS Asus finally got their connectivity issues taken care of.
