Sony Vegas compatible with Windows 7 64 bit?
Posted by Tad Hetu on October 5, 2009 at 5:05 pmI currently use Vegas version 8.0b with Windows XP 32 bit. I am replacing this older PC and have built up a new system and installed Windows 7 64 bit. I had assumed i could install vegas on this sytem but after reviewing their technical support and product requirements site i see they state that windows 7 is not supported at all.
Question: if i install version 8.1 that claims to be compatible with vista 64 bit; will this run just fine on windows 7 64 bit?
Seems a bit puzzleing to me that Sony would Ignore and not support an entirely new OS release from MSFT (for which they have had months if not years to prepare); but I am not going to step back to XP just for this app. any experience out there with windows 7 64 bit?
also, if version 8.1 does work…can i just install this update version directly or do i need to install first my orginal version 8.0 that i purchased retail and then “update” with 8.1?
thanks

October 5, 2009 at 6:36 pmJust because an OS is not “officially” supported by Sony doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work. Windows 7 is just a repackaged Vista without the bloat so anything that ran on Vista should run fine on Windows 7. You just can’t call Sony for support.
There are people running Vegas Pro 8 & 9 on Windows 7 RC1 who report that it works. (I’m sure some of them will answer this post) I plan to upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit as soon as my DVD media arrives (I pre-ordered it) and I don’t anticipate any problems over my existing Vista 64 OS (which has it’s own set of problems and I can’t wait to get away from).

October 6, 2009 at 6:01 pmI’ve been running Vegas 9 Pro on 64 bit Win7 RC1 for months and it works fine, aside from all the ridiculous problems with 9 that are in the 32 bit versions on my XP system also. I can’t speak to how well 8.1 will run on Win 7, but it probably won’t erase all your titles like 9.0a or crash the second you use a firewire preview device like 9.0 AND 9.0b. Don’t mind me, I’m just bitter 😛

October 15, 2009 at 9:37 pmI think you, like most people, mis-understand the technical meaning of the term “supported”. What that means, very simply, is that the vendor (eg, Sony Media Software) has tested the product, under that OS, on that hardware, to the point they certify it works as expected. Once that happens, the technical support people are now required to work with you if problems develop. And that does cost money.
So, Vegas 8/8.1.. you can’t really say you’re surprised these are not officially supported under Windows 7, not honestly. I mean, Vegas 9 came out six months ago, Vegas 8 is no longer supported with updates, and Windows 7 isn’t officially out yet. So you’re asking for an old version of the application to be officially tested on an OS that hasn’t even shipped in its final form yet? Hello, anyone home?
There’s a good chance Sony will announce Vegas 9 is fully supported in Windows 7.. far as I know, not yet. This is still a supported product… perhaps they have an upgrade, though by all accounts, Window 7 is just Vista with much of the stupid taken out. Vegas 8 works fine in Vista… Vegas 8.1 (64-bit version) was flakey, in my experience. Vegas 9 works great in both 32-bit and 64-bit environments.

January 21, 2010 at 11:49 pmI am running Vegas 6.0c (I know it’s a bit older, but I don’t see the need to upgrade since it does everything I need it to do)… Any ideas if this will run on Windows 7? I’m also eying Windows XP 64 bit. I have an AMD 64 bit Phenom quad core processor and I wanted a bit more speed during rendering and such.
Any ideas which would suit my needs. I’m not looking to break the bank.
Thanks!

Windows XP64 is dead and unsupported. Why would you even consider upgrading to such a platform? No one is creating new hardware divers for it. It’s basically a dead end.
Windows 7 64-bit is the only sensible option. I have no idea if Vegas 6 works on it but I have lots of older applications running on Windows 7 in compatibility mode that work fine.

April 26, 2010 at 5:02 pmJohn,
have you had success running vegas since installing windows 7? i just began running 7 a few days ago on a new laptop, and my vegas 9.0b (build 92) keeps crashing even after installing an ASIO driver. I am running the new i7 processor, 4G of ram and I still can’t figure this out. I am new to this forum, but any help would be much appreciated.
thanks

I’ve been using Windows 7 64-bit since the day it was released and Vegas Pro 9.0d has been running great for me. I’m using an M-Audio Firewire 410 audio interface with their 64-bit ASIO drivers and it’s been fine.

April 27, 2010 at 3:18 pmwindows 7, 64 bit was pre-installed on my new HP laptop. i downloaded an ASIO driver from ASIOforall.com, followed the pdf file for instructions on use (i think??), and it goes into a ‘not responding’ state every time i load in a project and try to playback and/or render down. i am not using an external sound card, have no antivirus active, or any other programs loaded onto the computer as of yet. i am at a loss, especially since i use to be able to use this same program (vegas platinum 9) of an old Dell w/ only 2G of ram and had no issues at all.

April 27, 2010 at 8:11 pmI have found that ASIO4ALL only works sometimes. It worked on one of my laptops and not another. If you want ASIO support, you really need to buy a card that has ASIO drivers. Otherwise I would not use ASIO4ALL because it doesn’t seem to work on your laptop.
A quick view of their web site states that the latest beta fixed a bug where “Fix two 64 bit compatibility issues that could have prevented it from working at all“. So it looks like they are still working out the bugs in their 64-bit support.

April 27, 2010 at 9:17 pmyou have been super helpful…just one more question (i think). i noticed on sony’s website regarding system requirements for vegas platinum 9, they recommend a processor rated at 2.8 for running HDV AVCHD. call me an idiot, but that clearly says to me that my HP with an i7 intel that’s rated @ 1.60 won’t handle my HD clips..right????
