February 21, 2007 at 4:46 pm in reply to: HDV 1080i 60 to H.264 interlace problems?

    Question:

-use compressor and when you select de-interlace set it to sharp.-

Are you referring to Sharpen Edge filter in the Inspector window that allows you to change the parameters of your chosen video format (H.264 in this case)? Once you select that filter option it allows you to adjust the amount of sharpness 0 to 100. What should this be?

    Appreciate your help.

Thank you for the confirmation. Canon’s documentation is very vague on this point. Even their phone support wasn’t sure.

Okay, don’t why it is that after you post something because you’ve been working on it forever and can’t get it right, that soon after you figure it out. I basically had two extra key frames in my attempt to set it right that actually were causing the problem. It seems to be in great shape now. Thanks for the tip on the temporal verses spatial keyframes. I get those confused.

September 14, 2006 at 6:11 pm in reply to: DVD burn speed and quality question

yeah, I’m still getting the hang of compression settings. Does that cause the blocking in playback from the DVD though? The digital blocking is intermittant for the most part. In other words, it doesn’t show up when you preview the mpeg2 file. Everything looks great in the process until you play back the DVD in a player. I can also play it back on my Mac G5 without any blocking, however the video does skip ever so slightly once in a while. I’m assuming that is a normal playback issue with a DVD player in a computer.

Is it a burn speed issue? I tried creating a Disk Image from DVDSPro and buring with Toast at 4x, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Should I go to 1x or 2x?

Caveat – Most content I have been producing are 2-5 minute video features where only one is on each DVD. I havn’t noticed the blocking issue since I went to Tao Yuden disks. The recent issue this is in referenc to involves a compilation DVD of five short video features. Is this relevant?

September 6, 2006 at 4:54 pm in reply to: using Time Remap with an animation – problems

I stepped through the original AE comp where the animation layer with Time Remap is applied. Every 6th frame is like a hold frame or a copy of the previous frame. It’s plays like the camera stops, and then starts moving again for the next five frames.

    Trying to nail this down.

    Any takers?

  • So I remember last week that we left the cassette door open as the XL-1 will time out and shut down. I think it actually made the camera time out and shut off the DV signal. Why? Becuase the camera remains on and still sends video out the RCA video out port that we send to our auxillar monitors for viewing in our Cafe are. This last week, I closed the cassette door (no tape in it either time) and it was fine. The signal went to both the RCA and DV port and the camera never turned off. Guess you just have to read the manual or keep learning by hard knocks. Thanks for the input though.

I’ll try the suggestions you made. Before we used our XL-1 we used our GL-1 (same cable – same deck), and it worked fine. That’s why I was suprised that the XL-1 signal just dropped out. I’d go back to the GL-1, but we need to record audio from a sound board and use the XL-1 xlr adapter.

    Thanks

March 12, 2006 at 11:09 pm in reply to: Best Project Management software?

Thanks for the response. Actually, I’ve been running a demo of Entourage after posting this message. Sure it doesn’t have a lot of detail and tracking capabilities, but the project center is really great. You can link any and all existing files to each project. Everything from calendar events, tasks, emails, notes, and even files like a video. The calendar view allows you to look at just the project events, or you can see all events at once on the same calendar. It’s a fantastic way to look at your schedule and prevent any conflicts. I can’t believe the PC version Outlook has nothing like this. How lame is that?

For the price, its almost a no brainer when you consider Word and Excell are included. My goal is not to become a Production Manager, just to be able to manage small projects well. Once I move into huge projects, I’ll hire a PM to do all the fun stuff.

    Thanks for the input guys.
