    A friend bought a set of the Rodelink and sold them shortly after due to the size of the TX unit…. He often referred to it ‘the brick’ due to its size.
    He then went to a Sony UWPD series setup.

    In regard to ‘Omni’ v ‘Cardiod’ lav mics, in my more than 35+ years of broadcasting experience I have NEVER had success with the cardioid pattern on a lav mic…… NEVER

    The XM8500 is a Dynamic microphone with a balanced output.
    The cable you are using is a balanced cable.
    The PS400 is a phantom power supply used to power condenser microphones (your is Dynamic and does NOT require phantom power)

    So what it comes down to is you need someway to input a signal from a balanced dynamic microphone…
    If you plug the mic directly into the computer, you may cause damage to the mic by the computers ‘plug in powering’ used on headset gaming microphones, the ‘input’ into a computer on the 3.5mm socket is VERY basic and NOT designed for high quality recording.

    You perhaps need to do some looking around for a USB device that a mic can be plugged into, there are many brands that would do the job. I am not going to start mentioning them as I have no details on your budget, the quality you need or the use it will be in.

    Also consider the use of a USB voice recording mic that will bypass the need for the interface and may actually work out better for you.

    I have 4x of those mics and they have little or no handling noise, is it a loose connector noise?

    I regularly use sure SM 63, VP64, RE50, Senni 835, and all have little or no handling noise, The RE50 is a mic within a mic and have been the workhorse of many networks for years. (but they are heavy compared to some others)

  • You have put a ‘Line’ level signal into a ‘Mic’ input and the clipping is caused by the pre-amp (before the level controls) being overdriven. They will be little you can do to recover the recording.

    If you want to feed a mixer @ line level into the H4n mic inputs you will need some in line pads of 40-50db.

    If you wanted to feed a mixer into the ‘Line’ inputs on the H4n which are the 6.5mm sockets, BUT they are NOT a +4 input that matches ‘Pro’ level gear, the inputs are designed as instrument inputs for music recording.

    If you want to use a +4 ‘Pro’ level into the H4n ‘Line’ inputs may I suggest some 15db pads to drop the level just a bit.

    The key for audio recording is monitoring on a good set of headphones, recording audio without monitoring is like using a video camera without a view finder.

    Phantom power?
    Have you tried a different cable?
    Have you tried a different mic?
    Have you tried the NTG4 mic into another device?

  • Firstly did you go into the H4n at mic level or line level?
    Did you use XLR cables or 6.5mm phono plugs into the H4n?
    Did you use any ‘in line’ pads in the connection between the mixer and H4n?
    Were you / some one monitoring with headphones in setup / testing and the recording of the H4n?

    Answering these questions will help us to identify where the problem may have occurred and better answering your original problem.

  • Some of the early Sony model numbers were a bit fragmented and the google info I got was basic… But lets assume it IS a stereo mic, In the searching I did tho find this that might be of help..

  • Are you sure the original mic is stereo as Google says its a Mono mic?
    Rather than wasting your time trying to make / obtain adaptors to possibly making it work why not just go to eBay and buy a mic that suits your needs.
    Converting Phantom Power to Plug in power is not easy to do.

    I have purchased several of these mics and they sound fine (my use is Broadcast)

    With BOTH the Tx units turned off can you get clean signals with no static on both receivers?
    Are the squelch settings the same on both the good unit and the bad unit?

    If you can get both of the Rx units clean and listening to a chosen Freq. then turn on the Tx units on those Freq. ….BUT the mics NOT connected.

    Are both systems both clean?

    If they are then plug in each mic…… has the problem come back?

    Sennheiser mics will often break the cable just above the 3.5mm plug that goes into the Tx unit. If thats the case buy a new mic as they are not easy to repair.

    Im surprised you can’t find some frequencies that work, even in a VERY congested location there has to be some unused space.

    How are you doing a scan as the Sennheiser units are not regarded as a great scanning device. As a suggestion try this.

    Turn just one Rx unit on, go to ‘U’ frequency select and scroll (manually and slowly) through the frequencies, find one that show NO Rf level on the meter, store it and then listen to it for awhile BEFORE turning on the Tx unit. After you are satisfied its clean turn on the Tx unit.

    If you want to use another system (leave the first system turned ON) then do the same again with the next system.

    Doing it the way I have described its normally quite easy to get up to 4-6 systems operating successfully.
    Just as a final check turn OFF Tx 1 and make sure that its no Rf signal on the Rx 1 unit.
