One of the female weather presenters I’ve worked with at the TV station it was an every day thing. The mic was on the left lapel just at the best spot for when she turned to camera. You could only hear it in a quiet room. I mentioned it to friends and it became the source of many laughs over the years. She is now working for another network and its still there to be heard.
Hi Jane R…. 😉 (not that I would expect she would be reading this forum).

What ever mic you use will need to be a Dynamic rather than condenser. Dynamic mics can tollerate VERY loud sound sources.
Mics like the Shure SM58 or Electro Voice RE50 spring to mind.

I would have to agree with you Ty about the VP88, a good crowd FX mic but NOT for quiet clean atmos. MS mics work well as part of a program mix but XY is far better for true 1 mic stereo, like atmos recording.

Go stereo for your situation and use an XY mic NOT a MS mic the XY setup gives better atmos.
But MS work well for some music production and some video shoots.
Something like a Rode NT4 stereo mic would work well. My favorite stereo mic is an AKG C522 but they are no longer made.
Record the sound in the widest setting as this can be reduced in post production.
Another idea for atmos recording face the mic upward, this often works well for trees and wind noise.
My ideal job would be recording atmos in surround sound using a Holophone mic.

March 19, 2010 at 11:55 pm in reply to: Which handheld mic is a better choice?

Another 2 mics that might be worth a look at are the Shure SM63 and Shure VP64.
The SM63 is VERY light in weight but robust and ideal for news / eng work. Have even used them cyclonic condions with a foam pop screen with amazing results. The only negative for the SM63 is that borded jurnos tend to unscrew the base waiting for crosses breaking the internal wires, a few drops of “locktite” when you first get the mic fixes this from happening.
The VP64 seems good but the mic weight is about the same as the RE50 but more modern in styling, and is a nice “balanced” size/ shape when using mic logo cubes

The “Rycote” Duck works great for rain….
I have used them even on heavy rain for fixed field FX on golf and football, but they would be useless on a boom pole.

As for dust protection I tend to rely on the fluffy windshield and its multiple layers of fabrics.
Another version is the “Rainman” I’ve never used it but it may be better for pole use.

  • I have used phase cancelation on a few occasions, the most stunning result was for live crosses to a TV “Eye in the Sky” helicopter, the microwave link had a video and 2 audio channels. I used one of the audio channels for the jurno mic the other as an FX channel where an omni mic was used. Both channels arrive at the on air audio console, ch2 was phase inverted and mixed into the program providing a significant reduction in the annoying helicopter FX.
A lot of phase reverse tricks do work well…. but its ALWAYS better to get good sound first than trying to fix problems in post production

Here is a link to how to make your own pads…
    https://www.uneeda-audio.com/pads/
They are easy to make, a 40db pad is better to drop line level to mic level.
