It currently uses the Nvidia Cuda, with ati cards you just get the MPE software advantage no GPU.

Shared memory(Shared Memory Architecture (SMA)) is the graphics card using blocks of main memory up to a certain ammount over graphics memory to booster performance, it is setup to anticipate graphics memory use and can tie up blocks of memory, keeping apps from using it.

You have to watch external drives, you want to make sure that the drive is a 7200rpm drive, sometimes they put 5400rpm drives in the large sizes, a firewire 800 theoretically is 100 Mbytes/s which is fast, also don’t let your drives get more than 80% full as that will slow down things, another thing to watch is memory, Ppro likes memory, I don’t know about your Macbook but some use shared memory along with the graphic’s card descreet memory, I don’t remmember right now but I think there is a way to restrict shared memory usage, like to 512m total, plenty for HDV.

If you are using a single harddrive you are choking your system, you need a fast external drive for your source footage, either USB2 or firewire. HDV is approx 13gigs per hour and is not considered large.

There maynot be a problem with the software interacting, the problem may occur with older software, a newer OS and newer hardware drivers,
Your video card isn’t on the Adobe approved list but there is a hack for using it, https://www.indiev.org/?p=317 also the mobile GPU processor doesn’t have as many processor cores as the desktop 285 so the Cuda performance isn’t going to be as good. -
Did you check the audio level meters? you may be going into the red and clipping, open the mixer and try reducing the volume

The problem with the laptop chipsets is that the number of Cuda stream processors is reduced for instance the workstation/desktop video cards have 192 to 240 streamprocessors, the mobile chipsetts have 128 and less, probably to keep heat down
Any laptop should have at least one or more eSata ports plus the express card slot, the ones with USB 3 ports could add fast arrays like Bob mentioned also give enhanced I/O capabilities with external video monitoring capabilities, like with the new BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle(USB3), and Matrox MX02 family, AJA I/O Express both use express card slots. -
Actually both those notebooks listed don’t meet Adobe’s specs for CS5 MPE, unless you hack Ppro CS5 because the GTX 285M ain’t on the approved list
