Adapters sometimes can be noisey, just use a 4pin to 4pin cable and see if that clears the problem, also some laptops use inexpensive firewire chipsets, there is not to much you can do about that, except maybe a PCMCIA or ExpressCard firewire adapter. -
If you want more there are third party software apps, Stage Tools’ Moving Picture, Photodex Proshow Producer, Grass Valley/Canopus Imaginate, they do cost money but are usually superior to the layout tools in NLEs, you can download trials

If you click on the source monitor you will see a outline around it, that means the source monitor is outputing, if you click on the program monitor the outline will appear and you will be outputing from the program monitor, likewise for the timeline window.

I didn’t notice that you had another question, I was working from the top down, since you are working with a XL1 which is a standard def camcorder I would just produce interlaced DVDs as not all DVD players are progressive, and output interlaced for the projector, it will scale itself.

What are you starting with, HD720p video or standard defination video?

Because it would cost more to add it in the $190 card you are talking about, most people who copy VHS tapes professionally have a TimeBaseCorrector/SignalConditioner, a while back you could buy a DVD Stabilizer(MacroVision remover) cheaply which would make quite a few(%80-90) vhs tapes more usable, those used to sell for $30-50, now you are lucky if you can find them on ebay for under $150, stuff like that and stablizing chips for older camcorder passthrough had the bad doda put on them by the RIAA -

If the magnifacation is on the grain will also be magnified by the same ammount. -
If a couple of passes of a head cleaner didn’t do the job its probably time for a pro clean job, you could have a bad head or some debris clogging the heads, over using the cleaning can cause damage as its an abrasive tape, also using a cleaning tape too long on a cleaning cycle can overheat the heads and glaze them.
