it seems like it’s possible but maybe the spline wrap has to be done first before adding the hair

these are the general possibilities I think. A texture limiting the light from a light object (a gobo) will give the stripes that we see in that reference image, that wrap around but don’t show where the curve of the arms (etc) cut the light off.

this works because the landscape can be made editable and a Disconnect run on the polys (with Preserve Groups off)
don’t know if your setup allows that (depends on if it’s animated or not I guess)

how was that image made? My guess is it’s a model in a ‘venetian blind’ bars of light gobo – maybe pure white with post processing later in PS or something or the light is actually that color – I’m guessing the post-processing of white light edges on the model then the white is removed last. Recreating it could be like that, a projected texture, maybe with a gradient could work, I’m thinking projected rather than Flat mapping or it wouldn’t stop like on the models arms.

some kind of scale issue, I don’t have time to dig but in the example the columns texture gets more complex as the columns get farther from the camera

and the scale of the scene is nothing like real sized (10x6x15 cm) so I scaled it up 250-ish times to something that might be real-world scale and it looks like this.

The material you are using was probably made a while ago when the default scale was meters or just made/tested on real world scale objects.

depends on what you want, you can select polygons and make a selection tag and assign that to a material so the material only show on those polygons and you can make all the polys in an object with the Variation shader

please provide the scene file – images are not useful in this case because there is so much that can potentially be a contributor

it looks like you are mistaking the difference between the preview window and the render which is not unusual.
The rendered material looks like the material preview (the Sphere in the material editor top picture) – which is a render of the material, so it should.
If you want the viewport to be more like render you can enable Enhanced OpenGL (which it should be by default) and make sure that Noises are enabled (in the Options menu of the Viewport). That will help get closer but it won’t be exact usually, sometimes it’s really close but not always.

the problem with the mograph tracer is it will try and connect everything in the order of it’s index. I thought of something else, pretty close not exact. Finally occurred to me the connections can be really simple and grow via an effector

haven’t team rendered anything with fonts and the help just says ‘other assets’ need to be on all computers but in Limitations it does say “If a Spline shader is used in conjunction with fonts, problems can occur if render clients are running on different operating systems that don’t have the exact same fonts installed”
