I have weened this problem out of my workflow by using 100% avi. I used to get it in instances that you mentioned but also when I had a QTDV clip on V1 and a avi with alpha on V2.
The QT clip on V1 was the culprit.

I probably lost an hour or more of time yesterday with the lockups/crashes/saves.

I currently have a project with 30,000 files under the main folder (some of these files are not referenced by the project). If we assume that each clip is five seconds in length the result is 41.67 hours of footage, which is completely reasonable. Many files are dissolve renders or little captures from the edl.
This project (the one originally posted about) includes footage captured via edl as well as two other projects that were imported. All DV25, stills and WAVs. The client wanted to combine elements and footage from all three so this was the obvious approach. It has ballooned to a massive thing (the project file is 114MB). One of the flaws of Premiere’s media management is the inability to import parts of a project i.e. individual bins or timelines.
In similar projects (this type or project is typical) I have noticed a distinct increase in speed, usability, and stability simply by deleting clips from the bins. Of course this strategy has limits and is usually only performed once we are at a very fine/locked cut stage.
If there are any suggestions out there, I’m all ears.

Hold down ctrl & alt while moving the clip if that’s indeed what you’re looking for

May be the shooter was a photographer trying to get vertical framing?

Copied the entirety of the Production Studio DVDs into a folder and maintained naming convention. Deleted Windows InstallShield(hidden folder) cache files under program files. Walla!
When I copied the folder to the HD the installer continued to ask for DVD 1, which it didn

I tried copying the folder to the desktop… no luck. I uninstalled/deleted any and all thing s I could that had anything to do with AE… no luck.
I put a call into Adobe’s support center. I’ll be interested to see if they ever call me back.
