  • Walter is correct, you need to understand the Memory and Multiprocessing settings, so check out the documentation link he provided. Make sure you’re running the latest update to CS5 (mine is 10.01.19)

Effects, Comp dimensions, footage type and use of expressions can all affect the requirements for RAM preview.

I have the same MacPro configured with 32 GB of RAM. Not all projects RAM preview faster and your memory and processor settings may need to be tweaked for each type of project. Experience has shown that there is no “one-size-fits-all” setting to achieve the fastest preview. My current settings are faster for the work I’m doing now, you’ll need to experiment.

Multiprocessing takes a few moments to spawn each process, the more processes, the more time it takes to start up. You’ll notice a shorter delay with 6 CPUs for MP and a much longer one for 20 CPU’s. Try to find the sweet spot for your project.

I use this script to adjust some settings on the fly : https://aescripts.com/throttle-n-purge/

    Here are my current settings:

Actually there may be no need to mask, just split the particle layer at the point the particles move behind the planet. This may be old-school, but it can work in some circumstances.

No need for the Ctrl key, just T.

    The basic transforms use single key accelerators (P, R, S, T, A)

I’ve been experimenting with settings on my 12 core with 32 GB. Most Comps render and preview faster when I use multiples of 3 for the number of cores (12, 15, 18 etc) and give After Effects RAM in multiples of 3 GB. Each proc gets 1 gb at the higher settings (wish I had 64 😐 )

This may be due to the memory pipeline inherent in the Nehalem processors, 3 channels of memory.

Not sure whether these settings are just voodoo or whether this is fact, however tests on the same comp with a variety of MP settings bear this out for me.

Sometimes Nucleo Pro doesn’t release memory. Check the Crash Log and Activity Monitor when the crash occurs, you can force quite Nucleo and see whether it frees up After Effects.

  • Looks like the still images were traced in Illustrator and where some elements were separated into layers.

In After Effects would become 3D layers then animated and composited with the original photographs.

In the sample you provided I don’t see you scaling the video, what I see is you adjusting the magnification level to 200% in the Comp window.

When you view it at 200% magnification it looks degraded, this is normal.

Edward, thanks for your reply. I understand how long it takes to develop stable software, particularly in ever changing OS, application and hardware environments. I hope it is released sooner rather than later.
