The Mac OS takes over some of the function keys so they don’t work in After Effects.
If you want to use the After Effects function key shortcuts you can disable the Mac OS function keys in your system preferences. The relevant settings are under Expose, I’ve set all these to off.
You can also access the Parent column by right-clicking at the top of the column or by clicking in the menu at the right side of the timeline and choosing columns.

Have you tried Photoshop Vanishing Point? You can import the VPE file as a comp and composite that.

The lines on the building aren’t plumb a result of the perspective/lens.
I used another technique, rather than manipulate the grid layer, change the camera orientation and perspective to match the shot.
Notice that the horizontal grid following the roofline is correct while the vertical lines don’t match the windows or building edges.
Not sure you can get an accurate match for this one… perhaps someone else has a better suggestion.

Make an adjustment layer the height and width of the magnifier. Apple Distort > Transform and increase the scale.
My Dad had the same type of magnifying glass…

The video’s really important! so don’t want to make any mistakes on this part. Assume it can’t be changed after you start..
“SD or Bluray? Is your source footage is SD or HD? Is it PAL or NTSC? If you’ll be using a PAL SD widescreen standard (HK is PAL) then use a PAL widescreen preset that matches your source.
If you’re creating all graphics and animations in After Effects use a preset that matches your output intent.
Find out what you’re delivering to and work backwards.

If you’re using the 30 day trial version, they aren’t there. When you purchase a license and active it, the plug-ins are installed.

If you are suggesting this: 1080p Comp > 720p Comp > 1080p Comp, make sure that collapse transformations is on, otherwise you’ll soften the image.
As far as h.264 is concerned, don’t output that from AE, use media encoder or compressor if you’re on a mac.

Many render errors result from too little RAM. If After Effects is starved for memory it will crash.
Changing these settings frequently solves this problem. Secret doesn’t mean “Don’t Use This”. Not is it an easter egg, its an important tool to solve render issues such as yours.
I often wonder about Adobe’s decision to hide this important feature.

have you checked the Secret Prefs pane and set it to purge memory every x number of frames?
