    Hello!

I’ve been looking at tutorial after tutorial to figure this out. I have After Effects CS5 on Mac and I can’t figure out how to make a Parent/Child layer.

There isn’t a “whip” in the timeline and when I press F4 and shift I get the shiftboard.

Please, please help me, I’m about to rip my hair out.

To parent theres a couple of ways:

To reveal those columns in the Timeline window, right click at the top, above the layers and select the ones you want revealed.

The Mac OS takes over some of the function keys so they don’t work in After Effects.

If you want to use the After Effects function key shortcuts you can disable the Mac OS function keys in your system preferences. The relevant settings are under Expose, I’ve set all these to off.

You can also access the Parent column by right-clicking at the top of the column or by clicking in the menu at the right side of the timeline and choosing columns.
