It’s been a few days but now I remember once I did some of these for a how to video. I made a series of templates that were designed to go one after each other. So there was a intro to step 1, and a step 1 to 2, and a 2 to 3 to out template. So if you needed more steps you repeated the middle template as many times as needed. Or something like that.

I still use AE a bit and it’s the only CC I still subscribe to. Although I think I’ll turn that off and just pay when I need it.
If one is doing most of their editing in FCPX and still using AE for their daily motion graphics, they’re likely doing themselves a disservice. The integration of Motion into FCPX is remarkable and can really increase productivity and efficiency for any project with motion graphics. It’ll do most of what you need day in and day out. It’s just those times you need the puppet tool or Illustrator integration that AE really shines.
It could definitely use some updates. But amazing how well the publishing and rigging has held up. Still light years ahead of what Adobe has put together. I’m quite surprised by that, especially since we’ve been using rigging / expressions inside of AE for a long time. That’s where Motion is great. All that power is put into the editor’s hands right in FCPX. If you want to utilize all the power AE has, you’ve pretty much got to know AE.
And as usual, platform independence will keep Apple from really being a contender and perhaps Adobe and Apple know that. The potential user base is restricted from the start.

March 13, 2019 at 2:09 am in reply to: Option to show timecode on a clip starting from 0That’s similar to what I do. I simply drag out a selection and while you do so, the duration is shown right there at the cursor as you drag and is the equivalent of a basic timer. I’m usually given sound bites, so I drag across a selection to the in point, and then mark in and start playing at 2x until I reach the end of the bite and mark out. Then mark as a favorite and edit into the timeline.

That’s a tough one I haven’t really seen solved. I’m pretty sure you’re equating this multiple texts with timing thing to a bullet list plugin. The elusive bullet list plugin would be able to add timing where specific bullet points appeared and specifiable times. As yet, I don’t see a way to do that. You can control where the build in and build out happens, but everything in-between is stretchable by design, so specific, adjustable timing isn’t really there. You can do some things that I’ve tried like having adjustable delay start on behaviors but it will only get you so far and cause other issues.
BUT, assuming you don’t need to make a user friendly commercial product….
Make your text with evenly spaced timing of all the text elements that you’ll change in FCPX. In FCPX, change the texts, then compound the title in a compound clip. Now you can add hold frames and/or speed adjustments to the compound in FCPX to get the timing just right. And it really makes tweaking the timing easy. Just extend or shorten the hold frames, which generally you would apply after a text has animated on and come to a stop, and before the next text comes on or changes, etc.

March 9, 2019 at 4:14 am in reply to: Keep the camera originals or not – what say you?It completely does. It’s even in the manual. Some formats really suck when not rewrapped. some Sony AVCHD I think. But if you ever have performance issues you just hit the transcode button and it’s then working off ProRes.
As long as you’re not working off Xeon, all these h264 formats are handled great by a MacBook or iMac natively. I do lots of layers and effects, plugins, compounds inside compounds inside compounds. All good. when you drag in, your import settings are what’s in the import settings in FCPX prefs.
