  • Can I change frame rate to play back slo mo in browser?

Posted by Rikki Blow on March 10, 2019 at 12:10 pm

I’ve shot some clips at 50fps to create smooth slow motion in an otherwise 25fps project.

I know that if I pull it into the timeline and set the retimer to automatic speed, then I’ll see it at half-speed as planned – no problem.

But is there anyway to see the footage at half-speed in my browser too, before adding it to the timeline?

At the moment, it always plays back at it’s native 50fps at normal speed in the browser, along with the 25fps clips at their normal speed.

So is there a way to force the browser to play everything at 25?

Unfortunately, no. In the browser it will always play back at the native frame rate.

A workaround is to create a new sequence at 25fps, drop all your 50fps clips into the primary, select all the clips and set the speed to Automatic to slow them down to 50%, then use that as your selects reel and copy/paste clips into your actual working sequence. Not elegant at all, but it works!

I’ve sent this as a feature request a couple times to Apple (allow us to set playback rate in browser). You should send one too.

Sure there is. “Open Clip” and change it there. If that’s in fact worth the effort…

That’s not a shortcoming of FCP (especially since every other NLE will do the same), it’s how THE CAMERA is recording. FCP is doing everything by the book. The camera is recording with a 25fps TIMEBASE, which is something else than FRAMERATE. If you were to change the timebase to 50, e.g. with a tool like KYNO, then it would play at half speed all the time. But then you’d obviously lose the “Automatic speed” option and be stuck with the exact opposite problem.

Totally forgot about Open Clip. Nice. Does this break relinking to the original clip though? Do you know if it causes any issues with XMLs to Resolve or another program?

In Premiere you can change the playback rate in the browser. But it’s not recommended because of relinking issues (unless that’s changed – I inherited a project where it required a ton of manual relinking and overcutting). I believe in Avid you can also change the playback rate of the source clip, and this doesn’t break relinking. So it can be done in other NLEs since it’s just the software using clip metadata to affect the playback rate. Resolve can change the playback rate too, but again – not sure about relinking since I haven’t tested it.

I’d love to see a checkbox in the inspector in FCPX where you can tell a clip to playback back at XXfps, and it will play back at that speed in the browser and will default to cutting it into your sequence at that playback rate. So 50fps footage would playback at 25fps in the browser and when you cut it into your 25p sequence it cuts in at 50% speed. If you decide you want it at 50 you just untick the box or change the speed settings back to 100%.

I highly doubt it would translate to elsewhere, since the original media is of course not altered. But then I can’t say for sure that that’s not in fact included in the XML. ????????‍♂️

Well, technically, that’s in fact exactly what you’re doing via the “Open clip” approach, too. I don’t see the difference, aside from maybe accessibility. And again, that’s also something you can change on a clip level with e.g. KYNO. Ironically something I do all the time the other way around, since I personally HATE it when clips come in with the same timebase as framerate. Something a few cameras will do by default.

I’d actually like to see any if not all of a clip’s VIDEO parameters be accessible in the event, too, yes. Not just audio. So you can do stuff like scaling, stabilization, applying effects etc. etc. in the event as well, instead of doing the “Open clip” spiel there, too. At least you batch apply LUTs if needed, so there’s that.

I’m a bit confused by what I’m supposed to be able to do by using ‘Open Clip’. When I open clip and pull up ‘General’ rather than ‘Basic’ parameters on the info, the 50fps frame rate is still baked in and not a changeable value (unlike name, reel, scene, take, camera angle, and even LUT etc).

So not sure what you mean by “Open Clip” and change it there.

Also, I can’t see any way to mark favourites and keywords etc using the ‘Open Clip’ timeline.

I feel like I’m missing a point here?

    You RETIME the clip there?

[Rikki Blow] “and pull up ‘General’ rather than ‘Basic’ parameters”

    ???? ???
Could it be you’re talking about the INFORMATION Inspector, not the VIDEO Inspector? There are no ‘General’ and/or ‘Basic’ parameters. Just ‘General’ and/or ‘Basic’ metadata.

[Rikki Blow] “So not sure what you mean by “Open Clip” and change it there. “

    … and retime.

    Ah yes, thank you.
I’d got as far as ‘Open Clip’, but couldn’t see how to change the frame rate (hence looking at the opened clip in the inspector).

By selecting both the video and audio and then retiming at 50%, I can then close that clip and go back to my timeline, but the clip will now play slow in the browser, which is what I wanted, and I can mark up favs and keywords while seeing it at half speed.

A bit of a faff, but the other comments above explain some of the issues why this might not be so simple technically.

    Thanks.

If you want to watch in slow mo in browser, you can play it back slow with the JKL keys. Hold down K and press L to go slow forward or K and J to go slow backward.

I was actually going to suggest that, too. But that’s slower than half, so I didn’t for the sake of German precision. ????

But I’m fascinated that Favorites change with speed. ????????????‍♂️
