Stuff in Premiere like storyboarding in a bin and editing that to a timeline is a nice feature. As is editing to the timeline in the order of mouse selection. I seem to remember being able to cmd+click a variety of clips in a bin and have them automate to timeline in the order selected. That’s just awesome.
I would like to have another view that allows arranging in a completely un sorted view where you can just storyboard thumbnails.
And for all X’s browser organization benefits, it’s nearly all lost because you can only have one browser window open at a time! I want to have different keyword collections open at the same time. Some should be thumbnail views, other list view. And list view is nearly useless because it doesn’t have thumbnails. Used to be we logged clips and the clip name had a decent description. But now it’s 745_054 and you have to actually load it and scrub it to see it. Thumbs are better, but then you lose all the list data. Multiple browsers is what I’m looking for here. For 4 years I’ve thought they must be doing this soon but nope. And really, I’m screwing up my neck with the browser on the left screen and the viewer(s) on the right above the timeline. Since I can’t scrub under the event viewer window, I have to juggle skimming on the left screen while viewing on the right. Kinda ridiculous. Resolve has addressed many many these issues, but with no motion integration or even basic built in effects, it’s still kind of a cuts and dissolve editor.

Why did you use mpeg (stream clip I assume)? There’s no need to convert the footage to prores first like ancient systems from 2009. But if you want to, just click the optimize checkbox on import. Or you can transcode after the fact in the event viewer by highlighting all or some of the media and right clicking and choosing to transcode.

That’s how X, Premiere, and Resolve show audio now. As they’re not really DAWs the top half of the waveform seems adequate 99% of the time and saves screen real estate. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a waveform be anything but a mirror image of itself anyway. But I’m not an audio guru and I’m sure there’s a reason for seeing it in the older style still preferred by DAWs.

December 3, 2015 at 11:53 pm in reply to: Using External Hard Drives for Video Editing in Final Cut Pro XWhen using a raid 0, you can take less risk by always having a copy of the original media somewhere else like still on the cards, or in the portable drive they were copied to in the field, etc. your FCP X project can be on the external raid too, as it’s constantly backing up the project to the system drive. And if the system drive is being time machined then it’s backed up. I’d make sure motion and AE projects are auto saving to the system drive too. If your raid dies, you have a backup of the media, a backup of the project(s) and proxies and renders can be recreated.

Is it an actual title template or a generator?

December 2, 2015 at 5:29 am in reply to: Workflow process for keying: Motion 5, FCPX, Resolve 12Been exactly the same for maybe 3 years now. So if all you’re doing is keying and positioning in Motion, then you’d be better off leaving Motion out of the mix. Resolve too unless you really have some 3D tracking necessary. You could emulate power windows and color wheels if you had slice X and color finale installed, but sounds like for your needs the FCP X color board along with draw masks should suit just fine.

November 26, 2015 at 3:14 pm in reply to: Workflow and hardware implications of H264 4k for FCP X vs Premiere? What GPU matters. Both rely heavily on the GPU so if your 2009 doesn’t have the right GPU, yeah.
