  • In Motion create a new title. Disable the title layer. Add effects, publishing, rigs to the title background layer. Save it and it shows up in FCP X.

Sure. Just render it out as ProRes 4444 with alpha.

Oh its a definite complaint many have. Other transitions don’t leave that option. So you have to do the workaround or change in Motion.

So did my suggestion work? Works for me. It isn’t really a bug. If you open the transitions up in Motion you’ll see how it works. It’s actually great when you want to push off a 20 layer stack with one transition and no compounds.

That said, there is a workaround. Instead of putting the transition at the start, slice the start of the clip and make the left of the slice 100% transparent. Add the transition on the slice. Now, since you’re providing an A source (that’s transparent) it uses that instead if grabbing the background.

The slide transition has a couple preferences. Push will also grab everything under it. Slide does not. Make sure you didn’t just choose the push choice or the push transition. (or vice versa on everything I said)

You can also right click, open in motion, and turn off the background layer tracks. But you’ll have to clutter up your transitions with a copy. A copy that will have to be installed on anyone else’s computer that needs to open the project.

I needed this and am replying 5 years too late. Easiest I’ve found is to just add an outer glow with inner and outer color the same, and set range to 0. A radius of 4 or 5 seems to eliminate the tiny soft edge, and will allow you to double up the effect as many times as needed to get the thickness needed.

  • You download gifs to use in Motion? Is that a thing? 🙂

Oh, right, Luna not alpha. Glad that worked.

You can also do it “non compounded” by choosing to do it “behind” but it limits other things so a compound is best as it now just functions as a clip with alpha.

  • Is there a reason for not using the integrated ProRes conversion built into FCP? Get editing instantly while the conversion happens in the background? Better question, why convert to prores anyway? If you’re on an iMac just editing HD, there’s not much need. On a MacPro, or editing 4k, probably should.

You’re using the image mask effect? That’s ok for just masking out some video, but it’s use as a precise matte channel for animation like you’re doing seems to be broken or limited. I think it’s screwy in the same way as drop zones.

The way you want to do it is similar to FCP legacy. Add the matte layer above the animation layer (or is it vice versa?- can’t remember) and compound them together. Then open the compound and change the composite mode of the matte to stencil alpha I think.

Play around with that, or someone else may post the specifics. I’m not at the system at the moment.
