  • Adding a stroke/outline to masked text

I’m using Apple Motion 4 and have a block of text added to an image mask layer so that the video plays through the text.

I would like the text to have a stroke on it, but have been unsuccessful in accomplishing this. When I add a stroke through the Text Style –> Outline, the stroke is included in the mask and is transparent – not a solid stroke.

I’ve tried accomplishing this using an object oriented mask via the underlying video as well as simply changing the blend mode to Stencil Alpha on the text — both result in the stroke/outline being added into the mask.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Duplicate the text layer, create the outline on the duplicate, and place that layer on top.

While waiting for my post to be approved, I did just that. Worked like a charm!

    Thanks, Mark!

How could I accomplish this outline effect with a keyed out element, or anything else that has alpha data?

I needed this and am replying 5 years too late. Easiest I’ve found is to just add an outer glow with inner and outer color the same, and set range to 0. A radius of 4 or 5 seems to eliminate the tiny soft edge, and will allow you to double up the effect as many times as needed to get the thickness needed.
