I’m having trouble finding a hub that meets my needs. I need two TB 2 connections for raid (with throughout to monitor) and 1 for AJA. I also need support for a second DVI monitor. The TB3 hubs either aren’t available or compatible. Plus, they have TB3 outputs which are going to require a TB3 to TB2 adapter anyway. The TB2 hubs will require an adapter out of the MacBook to use and only support 1 monitor unless you have a “thunderbolt aware” monitor.

So it looks like if I get a hub, it’ll require two TB adapters in either case. TB3 hub will require two just to hook up the monitors to the hub, or the TB2 hub will require 1 to hook up the hub and another to hook up an additional monitor to another port. If I need to buy two adapters anyway, the hub is just a convenience so I can plug in speakers, USB hub, power, etc all in one port. But if that comes at a $250 premium, I’ll pass and just use the dongles which I have to buy anyway.

  • Hi

I can confirm that it is rendering as Premultiplied black, which is unfortunate because straight alpha is the cleaner way to go. However, I ran a test and took a solid white object and gave it transparency and rendered it out. FCP X correctly interpreted it as premultiplied. But it was as clean as you can get. I superimposed it over an image that was partly white, partly video and there is no fringe whatsoever of black (even when fading up) nor any fringe over the white as it completely disappears over the white. So make sure you’re interpreting the file as premultiplied black and you should be ok. FWIW, in the project settings in Motion 10.3 I had the project background set to transparent, and background color set to black. In the canvas I viewed it as transparent (checkerboard) as you can see below. The other picture is a grab of how it looks overlaid in FCP X. The white is a color solid.

Send a bug report to Apple. I am.

PS – why on earth are you using FCP 6?

  • Hmm, he doesn’t mention FCPX or Motion. I can get an out of memory error on my iMac (32gigs) with 10-15 layers all doing a push slide out while another 10 are doing a push slide in. Especially if many of those layers are compound clips made up of plugins from ripple and motionvfx. Yeah, it’s extreme, and I’ve had to reboot just to have enough memory available to export or render. But THATs what pros are putting their machines through. There’s no paging that out. But even when you’re doing some mundane stuff like scrubbing templates in the browser, (especially 3D ones with motion blur), you can just watch your available ram (I monitor with memory clean) go from 22gigs available to 5 gigs available. And if you happen to have other apps open like Motion or AE rendering, forget it, 32gigs isn’t that much. My OS takes up 5 gigs on boot and quickly ramps to 8. On a 16gig machine will I be left with 8 gigs for FCPX, Motion, Safari, Mail, messages, etc? I ask because darn it I have one on order. I’ll report back in mid-December when I finally get it. 🙂

  • Highlight the project(s). Choose file>copy project to new library. Once you’ve created the new library (it’ll only include the used media) open the library pane in the inspector and choose to consolidate the media. That will ensure all the media is copied to the library or desired external location (in this case I’d choose library to keep it all contained and portable). Failure to do so will leave any external links as aliases to the media and not copy it.

They’re still there. To the right of “audio analysis” click “show.” It’s much nicer now that they’re on the same panel instead of having to click audio analysis and be taken to another panel.

OT- Little known fact- titles and effects are interchangeable. Just change the extension and one becomes the other. Their background layers have different names but they still work the same. So if you ever build a title and wish it had been an effect, just change the extension and move it to the appropriate folder.

Parameter behaviors will likely lose their connections, and that’s a pain, but otherwise that’s the only answer.

Another thought I haven’t tried… if you have it set to store Motion Templates in the library, does that mean any “open in Motion” Effects will be saved in the Library first? That I think, would be a nice default.
