In my title Motion Template I accidentally deleted the “Title Background” layer. Is there any way to get it back? I’ve tried about everything I can think of. Nothing works. I’d hate to rebuild the entire thing from scratch, but it looks like that’s what I have to do.

As much as I want to like Motion, it’s things like this that just drive me bananas.

You can’t get it back but you may not need it. You only need it if you are doing something to the underlying video in FCP X, like blurring it or masking it or adding other filters to it, blend modes, etc.

That is what I’m doing. Sigh. It’s just crazy there is a non-undoable action.

Just create a new title project and drag all your layers into it.

Parameter behaviors will likely lose their connections, and that’s a pain, but otherwise that’s the only answer.

OT- Little known fact- titles and effects are interchangeable. Just change the extension and one becomes the other. Their background layers have different names but they still work the same. So if you ever build a title and wish it had been an effect, just change the extension and move it to the appropriate folder.

[Mark Spencer] “Just create a new title project and drag all your layers into it.”

I did that. It’s a fairly complicated project. With all the parameters, rigging, and behaviors it’s questionable how much time it actually saved me. On the plus side I made some improvements with version 2.0. It wasted the better part of the day though.

    Thanks for your help.

[Bret Williams] “Just change the extension and one becomes the other. “

But can you still edit the text if it as an effect? I thought you couldn’t.

Yes you can edit text in any Motion project type in FCP X unless you explicitly uncheck the “Editable in Final Cut” checkbox.
