I’ve never seen the problems you describe, always just a delay in beginning playback much like Matrox, AJA, or using DV out in the old days.
HOWEVER – for the first time in 3 years I used my BMD Ultrastudio Express all day without it crashing out FCPX. I’ve tried every driver for the last few years and none have worked. Some maybe for 5 minutes before the crash, but usually it’s just a matter of seconds. Different computers have come and gone but the bug had remained. Only seemed like a few of us had it and so I switched to AJA years ago since BMD was of no help. I had assumed that the product had a physical problem, or it was some sort of software conflict with something I do or use.
But today with the new driver it seems fine. I’m happy, and angry at the same time that it WAS their problem all along and they took so ridiculously long to fix it. Or was it fixed by accident? Who knows. It’ll probably break again next update.

You’re doing it the way the majority of us do it. I think Jeremy was just saying having 27 projects in a library isn’t that many. For example, I’m currently on a job that is a set of 8 videos. On some of the videos we’re up to v5, 8, even v10. So that’s easily 40+ projects. One for each version. Lots and lots of compounds too. And since each version, except the current, is a snapshot, all those compounds exist alone. I would think that each compound counts as a little mini project in the eyes of FCPX as well. There certainly isn’t any magic number. Just like any edit, the more sequences, clips, fx, compounds, etc the more space and memory you’ll need.

That’s exactly all the work I avoid by simply putting the library on the raid 5. Copy media to raid from card. Then create library on raid. Automatically backed up on raid plus a separate drive (system) for the library. No worry about where the caches are or where the media is. Which means no accidental files on the system drive. I can also consolidate projects instantly because the media is on the same drive, creating a consolidated, no-relinking library to hand off or archive. Everything is also in one single folder on the raid.

To each their own of course. Speed isn’t my worry. Backup would be. And space. I’m not sure aid want to rely on Time Machine for a restore in a system drive crash. And my internal is only 500gigs. But even a 2TB internal is going to fill up quickly. I’m frequently dealing with 500-800gig projects (not including render caches).
I keep all libraries / media on my raid 5. By default the libraries get backed up to the system drive. By default all the caches stay on the raid. And no need to pay Apple tax on large internal system drive.
That said, I kinda wish I had a larger internal on the laptop for the occasional road edit. But I’d rather have a SSD raid 5. Looking at the one from OWC so I can have a more portable raid with the same insane speed as the MBPro internal, but with raid 5 protection.

Another way to look at it- by them going subscription, I’ve been able to cut the Adobe cord and purchase cheaper alternatives. If the need arises for Adobe, I can send them $30 for an app for a month here and there vs having to own the app. In the old days, if you were going to need the app you had to buy it. And if you were going to buy it you might as well get a bundle. And if you’re going to spend that cash you should probably use it and there wasn’t much point in looking at the cheap alternatives. In a sense I can have Adobe (as needed), Apple, and Affinity for so much less than when I had to own FCP Studio and the Adobe Production Bundle (and later Master Collection).

Highlight all the clips, go to inspector and uncheck the audio to turn it off.
Highlight all the “connected” clips and place them in a secondary storyline by pressing cmd-g to enable ripple outside of the primary. Connected clips are connected to their counterparts in the primary and only move with their connected primary clips. Clips in a secondary work just like the primary; always in ripple mode. For future use: The secondary is only connected to the primary at one spot. You can change that spot by command option clicking the “container” frame around the secondary where you want the connection to be. You can do the same on connected clips.
