Whenever I have an access problem with the Library (it happens occasionally with my SMB server) it tells me it can’t save the modifications. It is odd that you got no warning about that. And it is also odd it wasn’t saving the Auto-save on a different drive. I think you had a (bad) exceptional experience. It sounds like some part of FCP X crashed but didn’t notify you.
Sometimes it’s good practice to close and open the program periodically. This can also help speed things up if it gets laggy. Rebooting is good too.
One question, are you storing your backup files on the system drive or the RAID? It’s a good idea to store on the system drive and have a Time Machine backup. That way you can go back to any point in time, not just the files FCP X chooses to keep.

You’re going to get better results putting everything on the SSD drive. But, for sure put your cache files there.

At which point just buying an iMac is a better deal since you get a kick-ass monitor with it. I find the Mac Mini puzzling for it’s lack of graphic card. They could have thrown at least something in there, if not the top of the line.

It would be ridiculous for desktop use. And you don’t need the iPad Pro. But, I’m editing all the time in hotel rooms or in the airport. For me this would be really useful to get a battery-powered, easily transportable second display. Even on Retina displays it’s difficult to get enough real estate for all the windows. I’m continually closing and opening the parameter window and effects window to work. And I already travel with an iPad anyways, so no additional cost other than the adapter. Ordering it now!

I’m not sure exactly what you mean by this. I’ve mostly gotten rid of plug-ins. There’s a few I still use but managing licenses on multiple computers and having to pay for upgrades to keep them working has pushed me off of them. I also develop my own Motion templates.
I’d check out AleFX on “video hive.net” (take out the space between the two words, for some reason Creative Cow is blocking that word). Incredible value and well-made. And 50% off this week! I have the 700 transitions pack.
For imparting “looks” on footage, I’ve been using LUTs with the Apple LUT color effect. You can download lots of free LUTs.

Given that FCP X’s is free that’s a +1. But if you have drift problems it can’t deal with it. PluralEyes can, although I have no experience on how well it works.
And every once in awhile FCP X’s just doesn’t get the sync. But for those rare times it’s not hard to manually line it up. It depends on your cost/benefit analysis. For me the cost of PluralEyes isn’t worth the benefit.

The bug is still there in 5.4.2. The workaround is pretty easy. You just have to drop something in the Drop Zone in Motion. You can publish the parameters then and then Clear the Image. Controls will disappear but will still be sent to you FCP X template.
