[Walter Soyka] “Unfortunately, I think Motion has some catching up to do before it’s a viable competitor to After Effects for serious motion graphics. “

I agree. I’m trying to use Motion more, but there are times it just doesn’t have what I need so it’s back to AE.. It’s development has been stagnant for a long time. The base is there, but there is a lot of features that need to be added.

  • I think a lot depends on the nature of the school and the students. If it’s a “film school” then it makes a lot of sense to teach Avid. If all the students see themselves as future editors in Hollywood then it also makes sense to teach Avid or Premiere.

However, if the students are largely not in the professional video tracks and want to gain knowledge and practice with video editing as part of a broader communication education, then FCP X makes a lot of sense. I’m not sure about the value of teaching Avid to students who see themselves working in social media in the future. Premiere, maybe. But for these students FCP X would likely be the most valuable.

Any software that generates a full volume square wave for long enough time will blow the speakers. Are you suggesting that Apple should have code that analyzes the audio waveform that software is sending through the audio hardware and then stops it? That would be insane.

The comparison to the graphics card is a bad one. Graphics information stays in the digital realm the whole time. Audio is different because it is analog. That’s what blew the speakers.

[Oliver Peters] “If you connect via AFP, does the same thing happen?”

I need to try that. And CIFS too. But it will likely ding the throughput. And AFP may not be long for this world either.

    Nice! Thanks!

  • [Jiri Fiala] ” I was merely copying a project to a new library. “

The workaround is pretty simple then. Export an XML of the project. Import it into the new library.

  • [Joe Marler] “I have personally not seen this but I don’t do that much cross-database editing”

It’s possible it has something to do with storing media on a NAS. I find it more buggy in that situation, but it’s really the only way that works for me.

  • I do a lot of cross library editing, and this is a fairly common bug. I have not found a really effective cure. You can try it a second time. Or once in your library you can sometimes drag the clip in from the finder. You can make an XML of the clips you want to bring into the new library. Then import. That’s pretty bullet-proof, but a bit more work.

I’d say your chances are close to zero. FCP X is super picky about replacing media. I wish they had a less picky option where it could warn you that things might go awry, but do you want to try it anyways? And have the option of replacing with relative instead of absolute timecode. But no. No such option exists.

Make sure the length, file size, bit-rate, sample-rate, filename is identical. Then you can give it a shot.

  • Also bear in mind that the file you render out to has to support Alpha Channel. ProRes422 does not. ProRes4444 is the only current one that does.
