Definitely a phase issue. I’ve had this happen to me when my headphones weren’t making good contact. You can hear the music, because there are differences between the Left and Right speakers, but when dialogue is down the center they cancel each other out. The iPhone speaker undoubtedly combines the L & R channels so you’ll get phase cancellation. I swear I can hear that it is out of phase just by listening to your sample on stereo speakers.

Now how your audio is getting out of phase is the question. This can happen with a damaged XLR cable. In your case, I think plugging a single 3 conductor lavaliere into a stereo mic jack can make the channels out of phase with each other. The solution is as Jeremy says, make the channels mono, disable one of them.

Have you tried checking the “Dissect Packages” option in Chronosync?

    +1

I also changed the “B” from Blade Tool to Blade.

Blade Tool seemed unnecessary to me.

  • Looks great. I had no idea this existed. I will definitely consider it, but I’m wondering if I really prefer having two discreet displays over one big display. No more being able to hit the “Maximize” window button unless I want the app to take over my entire workspace. And with FCP X, you’d be cutting down on your event space while adding more timeline space. Hmmm.

Now if FCP X had ways to customize the layout…

Or someone messed around with the scale parameters. 🙂 ’cause that’s what it sounds like it is.

Seriously, it would be an interesting test to see if they somehow got changed. Weirder things have happened.

Although, I think you want to go with the top of the line MacBook 15 because its the only one with the upgraded graphics card. This could make a big difference in performance. I doubt the upgraded i7 makes a huge difference. Also 32gb RAM is important.

It could also be a changing environment for job descriptions also. 10 years ago I would have called myself an editor. Today, not so much. I go with the over-arching term “Video Producer”. It’s the only thing I could come up with that encompasses everything I do.

  • I use the Gain plug-in under levels, type in whatever I want, 6db, 12 e.g., heck I’ve had to go as high as 30db. I don’t trust the Loudness function as it sounds compressed to me. But I haven’t spent a lot of time with it.

If you shoot 1TB, have that on your drive, then import and rewrap, it adds another 1TB.”

That assumes you keep the camera originals files. I understand why people do this. We don’t. I don’t find it worth the extra storage space. We just rewrap and once we’re sure everything is there, erase the camera cards.

Incidentally, I have had as much trouble with people doing incomplete transfers with camera cards as I’ve had with rewrapped files. So I’m not sure it’s much of a fail safe.

April 28, 2014 at 2:20 pm in reply to: Anyone Used SoundSoap 3?

I’ve used an early version of SoundSoap, and it definitely was not nearly as good as iZotope RX. I don’t know if improvements have made it comparable now or not.

RX should really be used in the standalone application. I’ve attempted to use RX in the timeline, but couldn’t get it to work right. The key is to get a good noise print and that’s hard to do using it as a plug-in, as you have to set an in and an out where there is no talking. Then save that as a preset. I could sometimes get it to do it, but mostly I couldn’t. Spectral Repair is basically impossible in the timeline.

This is my workflow. Disable everything around the sound you want to correct in timeline. Mark in and out around clip you want to correct. Export an AIFF file (Mono if it’s not a stereo source) – I made a Compressor preset to make this faster.

Open AIFF file in iZotope. Correct. Save as .WAV file to avoid overwriting original AIFF. Drag WAV into timeline as connected clip. Disable audio track in original clip. Enable other audio tracks.

This is very fast. Much faster than trying to make it work in the timeline.
