Even if you come to the conclusion that it’s omission was not accidental. There remains the more significant question of why it was removed. No one knows what that is. It could simply be, it was too long so we had to cut out something. My guess is the reason portends nothing about FCP X or any other ProApp.

I have not found a solution. Just going along with the way FCP X does it at the moment and hope I don’t get bit in the future with a difficult relink.

Are you transcoding in Prelude? Or is it the camera native format? And what camera?

themusicbed.com is great, but can get pricey and is a per video license. premiumbeat.com is my go to for royalty-free licensing. For even cheaper I’ll check out audio jungle.net and revostock.com.

Here is a link to a collection I keep of good tracks at audio jungle.net – https://audiojungle.net/collections/296084-good-music-tracks

Here is a collection at revostock.com:

I will say when FCP X first came out I was not convinced about the timeline. Then finally gave it a test run and I decided it would make my work faster, so I jumped in. But it takes open-mindedness and willingness to question whether the way you used to do things really is best. I just don’t think all editors have that.

I think FCP X can work for longer format videos also. The longest I’ve done is around 20 minutes, so I’m no expert on that. It does have a tendency to get bogged down on longer projects sometimes which I think for many is a concern.

Can you get a SMART utility to check drive status, which usually includes temp? I don’t know if LaCie hardware RAIDs report this to the OS or not, since it may be seen as one drive. But it seems LaCie should have a utility to get SMART status from the individual drives in the unit.

I think FCP X really is the perfect editor for fast turnaround news pieces. Where it runs into resistance, and I know this anecdotely from one TV station, is when the senior editor doesn’t like the magnetic timeline and trackless arrangement. The lower cost of FCP X may overpower some of this with ad revenue on a downward trajectory. It will be interesting to see what happens as TV stations are going to have to upgrade their software in the next couple years.

I’m not sure if it can use all third monitors as AV monitors or not. I know specifically on the new Mac Pro it lets you use the HDMI as an AV Monitor. If you already have the card, it probably wouldn’t cost much to try.

I have three monitors connected to my Mac Pro. Two via Thunderbolt. One via HDMI. You can set up your third monitor to be an AV Monitor which means it will display full screen video. The other two will be primary and secondary.

It took me a little fussing with monitor arrangement to get it to work. I’ve never figured out how FCP determines which is secondary and which is AV. Primary is the one you move the main window onto, so it’s easy to switch. You can use the third monitor for other apps if you turn AV off in FCP X.

There were a few hurdles that FCP X has eliminated that previously made this harder. The first hurdle was they allowed you to import media into an external folder not connected with the library file. The second is they now allow the cache to be stored outside the library, so this has greatly reduced the size of the library file. Where once it wasted disk space and time to duplicate library files, it is now simple and fast.

Personally I think the file structure of FCP X is better positioned to allow multiple users to access the same library at the same time which would really allow for more collaborative workflows, but whether Apple will do this is questionable.

[Jeremy Garchow] “Final Cut now organizes clips in a folder based on the camera metadata date (just like it used to with the files) so the Finder is more organized by date. I prefer to have my file names match the original clip media, as I can always find my way back. I realize that this may not be a popular option, but I found when FCPX renamed the original media, it was harder to go and find the camera original media if needed.”

I definitely see how the new structure is useful for some people. Sl there should be a preference item to allow either. But, imagine yourself in my place having to relink a project that you finished years ago that might have media in 100 different folders. Each of them with identical names… Clip #1, Clip #2, etc. How would you know which clip is which? Unique names just make a whole hell of a lot of sense.
