I will take a look at Prelude. Is it on CS6? Our organization is still on CS6 for obvious reasons. (Ahem) Would I lose any metadata when I import into FCP X and will it allow me to retain original camera codec (XDCAM HD Canon and AVCHD) and be fully optimized to work in FCP X?

Not having spaces in the name is no big deal for me. I’m used to it.

It’s really for file management and easier relinking, so it needs to be at the Finder level. Sounds like the answer is “No”.

I’m sure I could come up with an insanely long list. But the most desperate from my standpoint:

    1. Solve sluggishness problem!
    2. Curves in Color Correction
    3. Ability to store libraries on NAS, better sharing capabilities
    4. Favorites and list view in Effects window
    5. Ability to customize layout
    6. Better keyframing (Hello! Ease in/Ease out!)

[Jeremy Garchow] “How long until this is a $99 filter?”

Yeah I was pretty excited about this when I first saw it. Until I watched the video of how it is done. Never say never. But it takes ridiculously complicated calculations to make this, and who knows how much user interaction. I would guess it’ll first come out as a stand-alone app. But it would be awesome to be able to do this.

Figure out how long you can go and retain good sync – (2 minutes?) Chop your audio up into those segments (with a few seconds overlap on each side) – export individually. Now you will have a bunch of individual 2 minute clips. Put those in a multi cam and sync. This will allow multicam to adjust the in point of the 2 minute clips to match the audio from the camera. At transition points between clips you’ll need to play around to find the best edit point so it’s not mid-word.

Another option would be to figure out what percentage off it is. Say 1%. Convert to 48K Use Audacity’s Change Speed Effect to change to the proper length. It will change the pitch, but only slightly.

Nice work. I try to reduce the number of third party plug-ins I use for future-proofing issues. But I might have to pick this one up.

One thing all Color Correction plug-ins are missing for FCP X is shadow and highlight stretch/compress. You can sort of do that with S-curve, but not control shadow and highlight separately. I had done that with manual curves on FCP7 and Avid, but there is no decent curves plug-in for FCP X. I sort of made my own stretcher in motion using keys, but it’s not great. I’m wondering if you might consider that with future development work. Or adding that capability.

August 12, 2014 at 5:46 pm in reply to: Audio interface

It’s not really possible with the way FCP X arranges audio files since they are not in tracks. Some really dislike this, I personally like it. It’s possible that some day they may add the ability to use interfaces using “roles.” But who knows when or if that may be.

So edit on Avid. Their interface has been largely unchanged for 20 years. If you don’t like the negatives that come with change you have options.

[Jeremy Garchow] “I know what you’ll say, it’s too many steps. Well, it’s how it works for now, and for me, it goes very quick if I need it.”

It also gives you more control working with fade handles as you can tweak the lengths individually. When cutting two clips of music together, I’m not sure I’ve ever had equal fade lengths on each side. But maybe, being a musician, I’m more finicky than most.

[Craig Alan] “I can’t imagine that anything prevents Apple from writing code that will allow this feature/behavior.
You can detach audio from an A/V clip.
You can overwrite from start to an audio clip.
You can form a compound clip of the attached audio and visual clip.

So all Apple would need to do is write a script and a short cut to perform it.
And it would be nice to have something similar to a compound clip that did not adhere to all the parent child save in the browser behaviors. And be able to break apart this compound like clip and reassemble.”

From the FCP X timeline design you can’t have an audio track within the primary that is a separate clip from the video that’s in the primary.

What you suggesting is a bit convoluted (no offense) creating a compound that doesn’t behave like a compound. Remaining editable in the timeline but a container of sorts. It would be a whole new object in the FCP X logic. Maybe “never” is too strong, but I just don’t see it happening.

I don’t do dialogue editing, but I edit the heck out of interview clips and have rarely desired this capability. 98% of the time if I’m cutting audio, I’m also cutting video or I have a B-roll shot that covers the cut anyways. Different strokes I suppose.
