I did a little experiment last week and captured HDV as 4:2:2 8bit SD via the component output on the Z1 and the Decklink Express. It looked pretty good. I hope to have a better look at footage later in the week. The downside is that there is now timecode.

Has anyone else had any experince capturing HDV to SD this way?

    Problem Solved!

I installed a new OSX 1.4.1 and FCP 5 on a new drive it worked perfectly. I then installed the BM driver for the Decklink Extreme card and that worked as well, except for the lack of preview, but that’s a known issue. If you’ve got a broadcast monitor you can plug the S Video into the camera and preview your log and capture that way.

I’m definitely getting TC in the capture window and I’m able to log clips in, but when I try to capture a single clip or batch capture nothing happens, ZIP, no error message, nothing.

I’ve just discovered a HDV primer under the FCP 5 help menu “HD and Broadcast formats”. The documentation on HDV clearly states that working with log and capture with HDV is the same as working with DV. Log your clip then capture them, single or batch.

My set up is correct according to the HDV primer, so… that means there’s a problem with the camera, with the FCP 5 or Tiger install, a conflict with other software/drivers, a hardware issue on the G5 or a bug in FCP 5.

I’m also going to install an OS on and FCP5 on a clean drive to try to isolate any install issues or software/hardware conflicts. I have a Decklink Extreme board in the G5.

A problem with the camera is a real possibility. The Z1 has a weak DV/firewire board. I made the mistake of plugging in the firewire cable while the camera was turned on and blew the board. The Sony technician said that in the last two weeks he had seen three cameras with the same problem. All had been plugged into G5’s. I’m going to try another camera or a HDV deck later today to isolate the camera as the culprit.

All of the above should narrow down the possibilities. I keep you informed.

I hope this isn’t the case, if is offline editing is out the door.

I sent the better part of a week logging in 15 hours of tape in FCP HD ready to be captured as HDV when FCP 5 was released.

As far as forced scene detection is concerned, it’s true, FCP 5 works just like iMovie HD.
