If it is still in warranty, I would pay to ship it back for repair. If it’s not covered, then at least they’ll give you the estimate. Keep you fingers and toes crossed and you may luck out.

By the way, I just sold two of my PD 170’s to B&H Video. They buy used gear and you can get a free quote online. If the gear checks out, they contact you and send you a check.

I also sold a 94 Mustang that was sitting in my driveway for 2 years to buy the EX 1. Imagine that, a car for a camera…..something doesn’t seem to fit…hmmm. But, it’s the camera to have.

I know that BH Video isn’t in LA, but I live in Florida and I purchase 99% of my gear there. They’ve always given me good support, pricing, and answered even the lamest question I could come up with, patiently.

I bought 5 grand worth of equipment a few months back, had it a week, it didn’t meet my needs, I returned everything with no problems or hassles.

They have free shipping on these cameras. I also have the Vortex video & their field guide. Sony has a rebate which will give you the field guide for free if you buy the camera by the end of this month.

I have the Vortex DVD and the field guide. Sony actually will give you a field guide if you buy the camera this month along with a $500 gift card for their sony style shopping.

I’m happy with the Vortex stuff, very easy to watch and follow. It helps get things up and running fast and he makes the workflow clear. I use it as a reference now in case I forget something (brain getting smaller).

Get the Transcend 32 G cards. $109 and they have a package with a USB reader for plugging it into the computer for uploading. I had to order twice because they were limiting the orders due to demand.
They can be found at this price on NewEgg.com.

I don’t know how to do it in camera, but on a Mac, using the transfer software, you can choose only the part of the clip you want to transcode for Final Cut usage. This saves you the extra time needed to transcode or unwrap the entire clip and allows you to keep only what you want. I don’t know if they’ve updated the PC version to include this yet.

Here is the link to purchase the adapter. This is the only supplier here in the USA of these adapter’s. They are $49.99. They kind of rip you off on the shipping / around $12, which seems high for a small light object.

I didn’t use any other 3rd party. As long as the shot is crisp, your photo’s will be too. I even sell photo books from stills I’ve grabbed off of the video. 8×10. I do some creative editing in Photoshop to make them pop; contrast, skin retouch, softening, colorizing, sepia, b & w, etc.

I just use iPhoto to put the books together. easy squeezy!

Scott Kelby & Matt Klowskowski: aka “The Photoshop Guys” over on PhotoshopUserTV.com covered a piece of software for uprezing. I can’t remember the name. They were also amazed on the quality. I’ve been deinterlacing my stills in photoshop for a more crisper image. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I’ve printed up to and 8×10 with nice crisp images. I mostly use these images for DVD cases or promo materials.

I only have CS 3 on a Mac Pro. My biggest issue is my menu chapter’s do not highlight half of the time when played in a DVD player. It previews fine. I even used the templates provided. I spent a month emailing Adobe back and forth, trying to solve the problem. I finally gave up. I now use iDVD which is to bad since I had some great menu’s in Encore.

  • I haven’t done any filming on a boat yet, but this is something I use for run a gun shooting. It’s called the DV Multirig Pro.

It gives you the stability at a low cost. It’s much easier to work in small spaces, such as a small boat on the move. I’d be worried about using a steadicam for safety reasons. If you go into the water, your sinking fast!

This rig has a small shock absorber that can be adjusted up and down. When your finished, it folds into a small space that can be stuffed into a very small bag. Quick and easy setup too.
