OK, yes the images are great, but do not think that this will be your main camera. It’s great as a 2nd Cam.

Biggest issue, OVERHEATING! If you shoot during the hot summer months outside, it will not be long before you get the overheating icon, & eventually it will shut down., rolling shutter is there, but again if it is a 2nd cam, you have some work arounds.

The sensors do not have adequate heat sinks in these small cameras. There isn’t a problem in still shooting modes, just video mode. It really cranks up the sensor operation. I didn’t have this problem in the 5D, though I’m sure if you shoot for hours like me, you might end up overheating that cam too.

Just be educated about what your buying. It’s easy to get caught up in the Wow factor of the images you see.

Are you transferring into final cut directly from the camera? You should copy the BPAV folder onto your hard drive first, then do the transfer or conversion of the XDCam files.

I had a big issue with the Transcend cards a few weeks ago. I occasionally get the “Restore Media” message. When I went to execute the restore, it took longer than normal. When I went to download the footage, nothing before the restore was there.

I don’t know if this was a card issue or the camera going into format mode instead of restore. I still haven’t recovered any footage.

I would recommend at least one 32G SxS for your important project & the SD Cards for B-Roll stuff.

  • Check out my post below. There is a link to free software for converting your 5D footage.

Even though the footage is .MOV, Final Cut uses ProRes for HD editing. That is Apple’s preferred codec. You’ll have to convert the footage using the software to proRes, then you won’t have to render and it’ll perform as it should.

You can also use Compressor, but there are many issues with Compressor crashing with trying to convert the files.

You can edit in iMovie the files as they are, right out of the camera.

Thanks, it was just one of those tools I’ve never used. There’s always something to make my life easier, or more complicated. I’ve been using the zebra. I try to stay away from gain as much as possible, but sometimes I have to boost it to 6db for nighttime event shooting. Even at that, it’s still pretty clean.

2 lenses that will cover most shooting situations.

    Canon 24-70 2.8 L Series Lens
    Canon 70-200 2.8 L Series Lens

The L-Series is the best glass and look of the canon line if you have the budget. There are many other cheaper brands that you can choose from.

If you get the budget to buy a wide assortment of lenses then after you buy the two above, start collecting PRIME Lenses (non zoom lens)
Always buy lenses with a 2.8 or lower F Stop rating, such as a 50 mm 1.4., 70mm, 100mm, etc.

There are many rental places on line that will ship you a lens. Average price varies from $70 on up depending on the lens and amount of time you are going to use it. Good Luck! Just keep doing your research.

What also matters is your location lighting. Do you have your ND filter on, Gain off? If it is a low light situation, then maybe these bumps need to be made.

I just shot an outdoor event at sunset on the beach where I had one EX 1 unmanned. I had to leave it at autoiris, which saved my butt. Once that sun started dropping, it went dark fast. The lowlight capability of the EX 1 /3 saved the day again.

November 9, 2009 at 8:04 pm in reply to: Difference between Apple XDCAM and Sony XDCAM formats?

Playback from 7D via intensity pro HDMI only helps if you have continuous clips. I know, I have probably 100 or more small clips. That means I would have to sit there and play each clip for capture.
Unless there is a way to have that camera play through all the clips continuously, which would be nice.

    Stephen:

Do you have a link to MPEG Streamclip?

Just wondering, are you using the latest version of compressor?
