There are lots of good brands, both consumer and prosumer you could use. Most 1TB 7200rpm FW800 drives will run you about $140-$250. If you’re looking to stay around 100 I would say check out Lacie, Seagate or Western Digital (but at $100 you’re likely to run into USB based drives). But if you’re willing to spend a bit more, GRAID, Glyph. With HDV material you might also want to transcode your material down to avoid lag, especially if you’re multi-clipping.

It will probably still struggle. You can transcode the footage down to a higher compression ratio (10:1, 28:1) and then relink back to the HD material when you’re done.

Sorry everyone, I got it. Multicam only worked on V1

Drag the P2 mxf clips from your drive to the Avid MediaFiles/mxf/1 folder and bring them in using the media tool? This is the default workflow for P2 footage. Don’t use AMA or Import, that will slow the process down. If you need/want to transcode after words go ahead.
You will be able to sort out headings once you’re clips are binned. In order to sort out what project type to start you need to find out what the footage it was shot at, 720, 1080p/i, etc.

March 25, 2011 at 6:18 am in reply to: Fast Import- Trying to Transcode before aividThanks guys-
If I do a straight import into Avid, why do the color levels look so much more saturated? I tried MPEG Streamclip and Compressor both 709 and RBG color levels but everything seems more washed out. I thought DNxHD was lossless? Fast import works great though. I guess I’ll just have to spend a little more time coloring.
Thanks again everyone

Log and Transfer is definitely your answer. You will not lose image quality, always go Prores in FCP.
-
Sam,
Try using the log and transfer option, it will allow you to transcode upon transfer to Prores 422 or whatever flavor you’d like. I don’t have FCP in front of me so forgive me if this is a bit vague. This tutorial might help.

Thanks for the input. I read you’re article Michael, thanks again. But is there any codec I should select and then change the encoder to DNxHD? Compressor isn’t giving me the option to just select a DNxHD QT.

March 23, 2011 at 8:59 pm in reply to: XDcam HD & AMA + drive to drive transfer issueHi Nick,
I could be off here, I’ve never actually had to deal with XDcam MPEG, but if the files are MXF, why don’t you just drag them into the avid file structure on the drive (AvidMediaFiles>MXF>1) you’re going to and bring the clips into Avid via the media tool? No AMA necessary.

Scott,
Shouldn’t you be able to just re-link to the DnxHD 145 material? Specify what resolution you want, or just highest HD video Quality in the re-link window. It’s worked for me with material that was transcoded to DV, then re-linked to DnxHD 175.
