  • lack of info on P2

Footage drive arrives, I’m told it is P2 and that is all.
Attach drive and yes the folder structure is intact (yeah!) but no other info.
    Frame rate, aspect ratio etc.
Other than wait for the director/producer to call in or send the shoot notes
what is the best way start the project and load footage.
question I guess is how do I discern what type of project should I start in the Avid?

I would start by simply opening a project, let’s say in 1080i. Go ahead and import your P2 media via AMA or direct import, your choice. Your bin window should give the info you are looking for in terms of frame size and video format. Then if need be, you can simply change the project’s format to what it needs to be to match your P2 video. It should be pretty obvious if it doesn’t match the format you choose for your project originally. The images will appear distorted if you open them in the source monitor.

    Good luck,

    Thanks
What bin headings tell me how it was shot?

It would be under the ‘Video’ Column in the ‘Text’ tab of the Bin Window. You might check that when linked to AMA before transcoding to be sure you are viewing the original format and not what Avid transcoded to to fit the project.

Drag the P2 mxf clips from your drive to the Avid MediaFiles/mxf/1 folder and bring them in using the media tool? This is the default workflow for P2 footage. Don’t use AMA or Import, that will slow the process down. If you need/want to transcode after words go ahead.

You will be able to sort out headings once you’re clips are binned. In order to sort out what project type to start you need to find out what the footage it was shot at, 720, 1080p/i, etc.
