re: external hard drive
Posted by Steve Foulkrod on April 15, 2011 at 1:20 pmHi guys,
I edit a lot of HDV content with a 21.5″ iMac w/FCS 3. I’m looking to buy an 1TB external hard drive for around $100.00. I know I need at least 7200 rpm/FW 800. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Steve

April 15, 2011 at 4:26 pmThere are lots of good brands, both consumer and prosumer you could use. Most 1TB 7200rpm FW800 drives will run you about $140-$250. If you’re looking to stay around 100 I would say check out Lacie, Seagate or Western Digital (but at $100 you’re likely to run into USB based drives). But if you’re willing to spend a bit more, GRAID, Glyph. With HDV material you might also want to transcode your material down to avoid lag, especially if you’re multi-clipping.

April 15, 2011 at 5:09 pmThanks Brendan,
I was able to find a Lacie 1TB 7200rpm FW800 external drive for $99.00 at MicroCenter. As far as “transcoding down”, are talking about during injest?
Thanks,
Steve

April 15, 2011 at 6:44 pmAre you working from a tapeless or tape source? The transcode comment was just about editing at a lower data rate (prores proxy, prores LT) so you don’t hang your system and then upresing back to Prores 422 or Prores HQ. I’ve had some issues with HDV in the past that’s all.
