Try using Snapz Pro X from Ambrosia (https://www.ambrosiasw.com) It’s a handy tool to have. Basically you’d play your Real Media file in Real Player, but with Snapz Pro X you draw a marquee around the picture and it will record that and the sound on your computer. Save it as a Quicktime movie with whatever settings you want, then import the file. It costs around $65-70.

Along with what everyone else said, 8 gigs free on your scratch disk seems really low. Do you have it on your system drive? You should get an external drive with more memory for your scratch disk/media. Check your system settings for minimum allowable free space on your scratch disk. Recommended is 10% of the size of your the disk drive you have it on.
You may also have a bad render file. Close FCP, trash all your render files (you can always rerender) and see if you can reopen your sequence.

As sympathetic as I am to OPs plight, let’s not be so harsh on Mark either. It’s one thing to bitch about bad tech support (not sure if a response engineer will be able to magically fly through the phone lines to fix the problem, but it could be part of their certification :-), but tying in a single tech support issue with whether or not Avid editors in his shop will take FCP seriously is just a bit over the top. I don’t know how others feel, but I don’t tie my self worth as a filmmaker or an editor, into the platform I use – besides, that’s what dropping Walter Murch’s name is for. And if one of the Avid editors needs to pull out the argument “yeah, but remember that tech support issue back in Jan 06?”, then they just are never going to change their position or be open-minded about the merits of another platform anyways.

Render time for a 5 minute clip: 17’30”
I’m running a Quad, 8gigs of RAM, and the stock GeForce 6600 graphics card. (I think it took me longer to figure out how to install the plugin and get a 5 minute clip onto the timeline in iMovie, then the actual render time).

Highlight the sequence in the browser, select Sequence/Settings from the Menu bar or Ctrl+Click sequence in browser and select seetings..

Shane’s right. And you’re spending more time trying to figure out a way to fit a round peg into a square hole, then it takes to just make a square peg to begin with.
You should spend some time learning FCP and create workflows that work with FCP, rather than trying to fit what you did in another app into FCP. (and understanding the differences between Premiere and FCP)
For your specific question, you may be able highlight the subclip in the browser and make it a new master clip (Modify/Duplicate as New Master Clip) and use that for your purposes. You might even batch export those out to a new folder, delete the original large media file (I would test this out first), then reimport them into your project (I’ve not tested this, so could be wrong).
As for sending the subclip to Motion, drop it on the timeline, Ctrl+Click the clip and select send to motion and only the subclip will be sent to motion. After modifying it, back in FCP, you can drag that clip back into the browser to have a copy of the subclip with the new motion properties to be reused.
Seems easier to just capture the clips you need in the first place – you can also log everything at once and do a batch capture.

Try Shift+Z to see your entire timeline. Select a clip on a video track. Click elsewhere on another video track (track 2, etc.). If that track turns dark grey, that means you clicked between the start of the timeline and another clip on that track or between 2 clips. If it turns dark gray and there are no clips on that track, you may want to trash your preferences. Don’t forget, FCP allows you to select blank spaces on video/audio tracks for specific reasons (to ripple delete for example).

Maria, don’t feel bad, I had the same problem with FCP 5 out of the box (and on a new computer) as well. It finally resolved itself when I trashed my preferences – the funny thing is that I trashed preferences for other issues I was having and never related trashing the preferences to being able to scroll down all the way in the browser.

The handles would be those already present in the first clip of the copied sequence, and the last clip. The transition isn’t between the “sequences” but between the individual last clip/first clip of the joined sequences (unless you nest the sequences before copying them over).
