Nope.
And you are seeing a very poor-quality and stuttering-motion image if you are viewing via the FCP Log and Capture window.
Its designed to be very low quality.I think there are small computer apps that will allow youj to view incoming video sources full-screen (or so) on a computer screen, I’d think that would be much better, but even then, a computer monitor is not going to be color-accurate like a CRT video monitor.
What’s more, the computer monitor will not show you accurate exposure levels. -
I’d suspect dirty (or worn) heads in the camcorder or deck, or a misalignment between units, long before I’d think something was partially erasing DV tapes.
I can barely get digital tapes to erase on a powerful “bulk tape eraser”.

I must be honest with you, if you have to ask all of these questions (especially 2. and ESPECIALLY 5. ), you need to find an audio pro to help; you with the interview.
If you don’t know how to record audio and/or operate the gear, going out alone and attempting to perform a one-time-only critical interview with a venerable subject is not a great place to LEARN.
If you consider this a “flame”, you are missing the point.
We all have to learn our craft, but if you are this “green” you really need some hands-on HELP and/or a few “learning sessions” before the “real deal” event.

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

Apply the “Color Corrector 3-Way” and turn down the Whites and the Mids,
then adjust the Black level.I have been able to make some pretty over-irised footage much more usable.
Another method comes from COW vereran Philip Hodgetts:
Multiply mode is particularly effective – if there’s any detail in the highlights it will build up (Multiply mode always darkens an image). Don’t be afraid to stack more than 2 copies to get the density you might need.
if you want to thicken up the highlights without darkening the darker areas, try isolating the highlights with a chroma key filter (yeh, don’t worry about the name) set to near white to pick out the highlights (you’ll need to invert the chroma keyer but that’s easy).

It is/was a signal that tells certain TVs how to correctly adjust the chroma, phase, set-up, etc.

The problem with with this idea is that the only “power” that is applied to the FW ports is in the 6-pin jack. The 4-pin plug does not carry power, just digital info.
That’s the difference between the 4-pin and 6-pin plugs… the extra 2 pins/wires carry POWER.
Since no consumer camcorder uses a 6-pin FW, the “too much power from the Mac” theory does not make much sense.

From “where” do you hear it when you are “editing”?
And I don’t understand what you mean by hearing it when you edit but not from the Sequence… I edit on my sequence.
You should have your audio and video coming from an external monitor (and not the computer) for checking quality during your edit.
Do you by chance still have the “Log and Capture” window open?

For whatever reason (and its NOT the FIREWIRE “standard”… since its the TAPE that won’t play… not the FW that won’t transfer) you are having trouble getting your Canon footage in to the edit system ( And yes, head-standards still sounds like the problem to me.)
If you find that a Canon camcorder works best for this, you might consider buying the cheapest home video Canon you can find (new, used, eBay, etc.) and using that as your source player.
I see them in pawn shops for under $200.
