Hello All,
I am a Singer and Songwriter, etc. for a small orchestra and we are trying to bring our Video production in-house. I have been on the musical side of things for 15 years and have always left video and production up to the pro’s, but in my current position it would be great for me to take it on. We have a Final Cut Pro (Mac) but I’m finding the learning curve on FCP to be steep. What I need is suggestions for what the right software is for low-budget TV & Radio production. Is there anything out there with “click & add” filters, effects, etc. to get good looking commercials easily? We like “cheesey” bells and whistles. (we do a lot of work for auto dealers) Should I stick with FCP, maybe find some plug-ins, etc? Is there a quintessential book and/or DVD/CD to help me learn the software? Most of what I’m finding on FCP is for music video prod. not car commercials.AND I hope I’m making MYSELF clear…

Not worth it.
The provided mic requires 5 voltd DC to operate.
You’d need to devise a way to connect the 5v to the mic AND get the audio connections to XLR for recording.
A specialized adapter-assembly could built for this purpose, but it would be far better to just buy a new and better mic that does not need the 5v.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

Ditto to all.
We have done shoots with multiple cameras, where one was a DSR390, one was a PD150 (virtual twin to the VX2100/VX2000) and one was a little Sony PD100.
When we cut between them (we had proper lighting) there was so little difference that nobody (outside the crew) ever even commented.

If you’re talking about the FCP Text generators, you should simply avoid using them.
Instead use the text generators called “Title 3D and “Title Crawl” (from Boris), included on the install discs of FCP.

I recommend that you continue to use the camcorder as you have been.
The camcorder will likely become obsolete long before the heads wear out.
(My basement is a testament to gear that still works great… but there’s no real USE for it anymore.)But if you really just WANT to record on an outboard audio deck and you want “highest quality” you want a portable DAT (Digital Audio Tape) recorder ($$$$).
DAT can record at the same 48 kHz 16bit digital as the camcorder (“no loss” compression).Second choice would be an MD recorder (lots of “lossy” compression to the audio).
LAST choice would be an mp3 recorder (horendous “lossy” compression to the audio).

Optical (mechanical) stabilization does not degrade the image the way electronic (digital) stabilization does.
With the optical system, whether or not it is switched ON, the image passes through the same lens elements.
With the digital system, the electronic image is “expanded” (“blown up) for the system to be eable to manipulate the picture… it reduces the image quality slightly (some units more than others).

But to be SURE, you should rewind a bit, then PLAY the tape and PAUSE it before the TC runs out again.Then switch to “camcorder” mode to begin further recording.

If you are using a “DUAL” VHS/DV Deck, the VHS tapes will not play down the FireWire (only the DV tapes will do that).
You should first dub the VHS to a DV tape, then capture the DV tape into FCP.
