That said.
The new FCP 5 has a true multi-cam capability but for years, with earlier FCP versions, many of us used the following:
Syncing all of your video takes on separate layers is a preferred way to edit these kinds of things.
You can just stop playback at each point you want (need) a cut and click thru each of your angles, picking the one that best-fits the mood.

OR… You can “shrink” one or all of the video tracks (with “Scale” in the Motion Tab) and position each so that ALL tracks are visible (though small) at the same time. Depending on your system (and the number or tracks) you may need to render this temporary “split-screen” so that it will play in real-time.

This will make fast work of your cut decisions.
Each time you decide which of the shots you want in the final edit, slice it (razor blade) on both ends, and “shift-drag” (won’t slip) it up to a new, TOP video track (which will be ultimately be your “final” track.)
After you are finished making cut decisions, select ALL the clips on this TOP track and “Remove Attributes” so all the video will snap back to full size and normal position.
Then add any effects.

As for Titles:
Use “Title 3D” and NOT the FCP native Titlers.
“Title 3D” (from Boris) comes on the original FCP install disc, so if you don’t see it as one of your title options, grab the install disc and CHOOSE to install it.

Just create the first Title and –add it to the timeline– with the right font(s), colors, and sizes. Position it correctly (remember that the vertical position MUST be an EVEN WHOLE NUMBER in the Motion tab).
Keep in mind how this composition will look with the LONGEST names.
Next add the “Opacity” RAMP-UP and RAMP-DOWN timings (for the dissolves in and out.)

Then, from, the timeline, double-click this completed Title back into the viewer and simply drag it from the Viewer over into your Bin.

This first title will be your “template”.
You can keep dropping this “first one” from the Bin right back onto the timeline when you want a new Title.

Just remember after you drop it onto the timeline EACH TIME to:
1. Double-click it back into the Viewer
2. “Type OVER it” with each new name.

Recapture IS the way to fully “recover” video/audio clips.

Any other method will take much more time and and be probelmatic (if not toally useless) when it comes to actually being able to USE the clips even after they were “recoverd” by software.

Likewise, the music downloaded onto PC’s in the WMA format from sites like Wal-Mart Music Downloads is severely restricted (i.e. Must be running Windows, not compatible with iPod, can’t convert to other formats).

This is all designed to inhibit illegal use.
The license agreements the music companies have drawn up with the “music download service providers” INCLUDES the condition that these files will ONLY be provided at the price specified for personal LISTENING and “electronically safeguarded” as such.

This is in direct connection with a little situation some of us may have heard about called “Napster”.
(It was in all the papers a while back.)

Everyone knows there are those who look for ways to circumvent any safeguard (and legality).

But it is actually ILLEGAL to PROVIDE INSTRUCTIONS to explain how to do this.

Its not strictly a “free speech” -I can say anything I want anytime- issue.

If you simply discuss it amongst your peers at “Miller Time,” I doubt that the paddy wagon will show up, but “publishing” info in a broad manner (I think a post on the COW is broadly-read) can be touchy.
And, I’m sure the operators/owners of the means of dissemination (the Creative COW, in this case) can also be held responsible… to a “certain degree”. (Lawyers LOVE that phrase).
When the “free speech” advocates breaking the law, the reigns get tightened.

Let’s see. The guy who installs all the alarm systems in a 60-unit condominium subsequently sells the access codes on eBay. Its his “free speech.” How’d HE know what someone was gonna do with the codes?
Legal quagmire? Sure.
But it is certainly one of those things that can add additional legal “counts” (charges) to a case brought against violators.

That’s why any time this subject comes up and there’s the “ahhh, who’s gonna KNOW or care” posts, several of the “regulars” here get “agitated.”
I say with good reason.

A great way to save these little “problems” is (when you know you’re going to want different VERSIONS of the same timeline (some with THIS, some with THAT, some CLEAN)… is just to DUPLICATE (option-D) a timeline in the Browser and rename it.

Then you can keep (one or several copies of ) your original edit, and add “extra effects” to different copies.

I also do this frequently on an everyday basis as I progress into a complex edit.
(I add the “tags” .v1, .v2, .v3, etc. to my Timeline name as I go along in the day.)
That way, if I “start down a path” that just doesn’t “work out”, its easy to revert to a former “good” edit (make ANOTHER copy of IT) and try another approach.

And just as a HABIT… I hit SAVE (apple-S) about 20 times an hour… you can’t be too careful!

BTW, I started doing this on Avid years ago and its saved me a lot of problems.
