You must have “handles” (“extra footage”) on one or both of two adjacent clips to allow a dissolve (or other “Mixing” transition).
So, assuming you wanted a 1 sec. transition between any two ten-second clips:
a) You’d need at LEAST 11 seconds total length (one second of “extra footage”) on the end of the FIRST clip
b) Or, you’d need at LEAST 10.5 seconds total length on BOTH clips (half sec. of “extra footage” at the end of the FIRST clip, and half sec. of “extra footage” at the beginning of the SECOND clip.
c) Or, you could make the “Out-point” several frames EARLIER in the first clip and/or make the “In-point” several frames LATER in the second clip and the transition could then be the length that you moved the point(s).
-OR-
You could make a STILL-FRAME of the last frame of your first clip and dissolve THAT out for as long as you want.

Change the SPEED of your clip(s) (slow-mo) and that will allow for a longer dissolve length.

Try this:
Perform another audio “Mixdown” (Sequence menu > Render Only > Mixdown) on your final timeline.
Make sure ALL of your audio tracks are “selected” (highlighted) before you do the mixdown. -
How about hiring a starving college student who is a fast typist?
That’s how many ACCURATE transcriptions are done.
Voice-recognition software is still very inaccurate for this kind of thing.

Let me guess:
1. You used “Capture NOW” when you input the tape.
2. You captured LONG sections of the tape instead of short scenes.
3. You shot with a Canon camcorder.
4. The audio on the camcorder is set to 32 kHz (12 bit) and not 48 kHz (16 bit).The above reasons (alone, or in combination) are the main reasons for Audio/Video “slippage”.
When the audio gets far enough “off” that you want to fix it (AFTER you edit the scenes to the timeline) use the “Razor Blade Tool” to cut the audio track in two or more sections, then just SLIDE the audio (using the Arrow cursor) into sync with the video.
You may need to do this several times during the edit. It gets easier after you fiddle with it a while. -

MANY editors who work with FCP and DV do NOT have a deck.
They use their DV camcorders connected between FCP and their monitors.There is no “wear” associated with using a camcorder for D-to-A conversion (certainly its not
“overkill”).OTOH, if you want one, there are many DV-to-analog (and back) converter boxes available.
But another option is to buy a used small “home video” DV camcorder to use with FCP.
It can free your “good” camcorder from capturing and recording to and from FCP and it will work as the DV-to-analog convertor for your monitor.
The audio/image quality of an inexpensive camcorder’s “tape transport” record/playback is identical to that on an expensive deck or camcorder’s.
I have bought several of these for under $200 at Pawn Shops.
(You also then have the “backup” of a small extra camcorder if you need it.) -

After you’ve captured all of the master clips (in a project you call “Media Only”), they will be found in a folder called “Capture Scratch” inside another folder called “Media Only” (called that because that’s what you named this project).
You can just drop this WHOLE “Media Only” FOLDER (actually it will become a sort of “alias” of the “real” folder which will remain where it is on the hard drive) into the Browser window ANY and as many FCP projects (new and old) as you’d like, and all of the clips in this folder will be instantly ready to use.
Example: If I capture running car footage for a car spot I editied in, say January… I can just open the “Capture Scratch” folder, find the name of the January car spot, and drop thesame captured clip(s) of footage into the Browser of a spot I’m editing in July.
