It all depends on the “prompter” you’re using.
Many are PC-based so you need a laptop PC if you go on-location.
Some are Mac-based, so a Powerbook or iBook is needed.
Some even use a small video camera that shoots the script and sends that to the prompter screen.Regardless, you need lots of extra set-up time and you will LIKELY need an extra crew member because YOU can’t run the prompter and shoot at the same time (unless its a total lock-down for each take.
Don’t bother with any system that just sits “close” to the lens… the talent’s eyes will never look “right” (they will be looking “off-camera” all the time.)
The secret to a GOOD prompter is the special “front-coated” two-way mirror system that mounts in FRONT of your camera lens.
That allows the talent to be able to look directly into the lens as he reads.
BUT that also requires special mounting hardware so that it will all fit onto your tripod.
A heavy-duty tripod is better, sometimes EXTRA heavy-duty is needed (see below).Electronic (computer-based) prompters run the gamat from being very simple (with not many choices of settings) or very complex (with difficult to navigate menus).
Electronic prompters are the most versatile, as you can quickly change the copy by just retyping with the computer keyboard (or import it from a Word Processor document).There are LCD monitors which are small and lightweight (and therefore you need to be quite CLOSE to the talent for her to see it well), and there are LARGE CRT monitors that the talent can read from a greater distance, but require the use of counter-weights and an EXTRA HEAVY-DUTY tripod to carry it all.
Otherwise, there are one or two totally NON-electronic “through-the-lens” (mirror) prompters as well.
You simply PRINT the copy on a standard 8.5″ x 11″ sheet, and lay that sheet on the top of a mirror setup. No computer, no operator.
The downside is, for each take, you can only use as much copy as will fit on a single sheet of paper with type large enough for the talent to READ. (But, you can even print by hand with a Sharpy pen, if you don’t have a computer and printer handy.) -
Make the Viewer (or Canvas) Window as big as you like (for the time it takes you to work on something small).
Just drag the lower right-most corner of the window out and down.
After you’re done, drag it back to where it normally fits, then make sure you still have “Fit to Window” selected.

Having the L&C window open is one of the main roadblocks when trying to PLAY the timeline out via FireWire (basically, the FW “output to the DV device” won’t work with the L&C window open.)
If you’re not using FW out to a monitor, and you have no problems viewing the timeline PB on an external monitor (I’m assuming you’d have an external monitor in the booth for the talent) then go ahead and try your workaround.
As to capturing a “mono” (1 channel) or “stereo” (2-channel) source, the software won’t “care” if you don’t.
You’d just pan it where you want it as you continue to edit. -
Why not just record to a TAPE (in a camcorder or deck)?
You’ll have Timecode and its easily stored for future use.
The only “advantage” of using the VO Tool (being able to play the timeline at the same time) is lost if you use “Log and Capture” anyway.

Try trashing your Preferences AGAIN (then “re-Checkmark” all of the Render selections) and see if that bring you back to life.

It creates a NEW file that is the COMPLETE version of the entire timeline.
In the DV codec, it is identical to making a copy back out to a DV tape (the same digital info that goes to the tape.)
If a production facility has the ability to play DV material, it can import the QT file from the disc and use it any way they want.
That’s why, given CJOHNSEN’s original question, I gave this answer (it will be the same quality as giving the station a DV tape.)Saying the station may or may not ACCEPT this on a disc… that was not part of the original question. Of course it should be determined what a station accepts before making them any copy.
BTW, if you do NOT check “Make Movie Self-contained”, the QT will need to reference much of the ORIGINAL captured files on your disc to actually play, so a NON-self-contained movie won’t play when output, by itself, to a removable disc.

That’s because you said:

Try NOT setting the Beachtek to “MONO” and just recording the one mic on ONE audio channel.
See if that gives you more level on that one channel.
The act of “splitting” the single mic to two channels (Mono position on the Beachtek) might (that’s MIGHT) cause a drop in level (that’s what Ty was talking about).There is no reason to NEED the same audio on both channels of the tape as you can just pan that one channel to “center mono” during the edit.
If you find that you DON’T get more level in the “Stereo” position (using just one channel) then you may set the selector to EITHER position you’d like.>>>BTW, check your CAMERA’s menu setting for “MIC ATT” (Microphone Attenuator).
Make sure it is set to OFF. This will give you maximum audio level from the mic input.
