Don’t use the matte color.
Simply put the “inside” video on an upper video track (if you are putting it over another clip) and appy the “Mask shape” filter (set for Oval and adjust) AND the “Mask Feather” filter and adjust to the softness desired.

It was just too weird to ignore.

A common workaround is to make a FW to FW Clone (Dub,) camera-to-camera or deck, of the entire tape and capture only the new copy.
This can usually eliminate some tracking or similar problems on the master tapes.
Try it on one tape and see.

A QuickTime movie can be imported into FCP.
Shouldn’t matter where it came from.

I clone tapes between my camcorder and deck.
And that saves a “pass” thru FCP… and does not tie up my computer for that re-dub time.
But, its all good, if that’s the way you like to do it.

The cheapy camcorders can’t do single-frame time-lapse (rather, they record a “few seconds of tape” at a time) and they don’t have much adjustment of the length of time between “exposures.”
Using a digital still camera with software to trigger it, is the least expensive way to go.
The new Sony XDCAM PMW EX 1 HD Camcorder does offer single-frame time-lapse ($6,700 price-tag for the camera, when available.)
There is also computer software that will record single-frame time-lapse directly to the computer from the FireWire of any video camcorder.
