I’m trying to make a white Shape from Video Generators, give it a soft edge and then use it as a matte. (I’m trying to create a vignette that takes the image away entirely at the edges so I get something that looks like a slide projector) My problem is when I apply a luma key to it the white goes away, but the gradient where I applied the softness to it stays on the screen as a diminishing gray band. I’m sure there is some easy way to do what I want to do without stepping outside FCP, but I’m stumped as to how.

    Any ideas?

    Don’t use the matte color.

Simply put the “inside” video on an upper video track (if you are putting it over another clip) and appy the “Mask shape” filter (set for Oval and adjust) AND the “Mask Feather” filter and adjust to the softness desired.

    You can make this:

Put you footage on v2 and your matte on v1. RIght click on the footage in v2 and change the composite mode to Travel Matte – Luma. Adjust the matte to taste.
