Even if that were a possibility, that is only a situtaion that exists when using the analog outputs.
The choice of “character overlay” is virtually always only for the analog output.If the date (or any overlay) is seen in the FireWire output, its a good bet that its already recorded on the tape.

Doesn’t sound good. If the logic board got a real ZAP of static (or any other kind of jolt) it MIGHT be “toasted”.
To make sure its not any kind of incoming “wild” voltage or surges,
try connecting ONLY a stand-alone camcorder, (running on its own battery) playing a tape, directly to the monitor (disconnect any other gear and/or sync cables) and see if the monitor buttons still act oddly. -
Turn on the “auto select” (little box to the right of the “padlock” track-lock icon) ONLY on the track on which you wish to select the clip.
Put the cursor over the clip in question and hit the “x” key.

Click once in the Browser and hit “Apple + N”. That creates a new timeline.

Sounds like it might have been a “static electricity” issue.
( A jolt can sometimes “lock” the logic.)If it happens again, try pulling out the AC plug for 60 seconds, plug back in, and see if all is well.

—————————————————————The audio is, by default, intentionally MUTED to the Mac’s speaker output during Log and Capture.
So you should normally monitor the audio directly from the camcorder or deck you are using to capture. (It is the preferred method.)
CAUTION:
Many people have reported that noise or “pops” appear in the captured clips if the Mac’s internal audio is left on WHILE capturing… so may want to choose “Off During Capture.”However, there is a way you can turn ON the Mac’s speaker if you really WANT to:

In FCP4x and earlier:Final Cut Pro (menu) > Audio/Video Settings… > Capture Presets (tab)
“Duplicate” the Capture Preset you are now using, when the window opens rename it (I added “MacAudioOn” to the file name).
Click open the “Advanced” button in the Audio section and turn speakers to “ON during Capture.”
The Mac speakers/audio-out will now play Audio during the preview in the Log and Capture window.
